What has been the survival rate of 2 and 2a stations wagons?

I think I'd like to have one to transport the family around!

There never were that many, especially in Australia. In this period (1958-72) four wheel drives were almost never bought new as family transport - almost all the station wagons sold were sold as personnel transport for mining, exploration, government or military bodies, and these used them very sparingly, mostly using hardtops with bench seats for this purpose, the station wagons being only used for VIPs.

I would guess that the survival rate is about the same as other 2/2As, but because there were never very many, I rarely see them. Series 3 ones are somewhat more common, possibly because by late Series 3 production they were beginning to be bought as family transport, but even these, I would be lucky to see one on the market two or three times a year. Mind you, if I was actively looking for one I might see more.

They seem to be a bit thin on the ground, both LWB & SWB.

Had my eye on a LWB Series IIa 6 cyl on Ebay a year or so ago. Barn stored for 15 years (from memory), not running, 11 seats, complete and more importantly, unmolested.
Finally went for about $6,500

I was lucky to pick up a Dormobile for less than that and it could be driven and had brakes that worked (sort of) as well. Still needs a fair bit of work before it gets back on the road and even more work before I take it away camping.

Station Wagons would have been relatively expensive in their day when the majority of Land Rovers were working vehicles. So limited numbers and not sure of their survival rate.
Have seen a few Series III's come up recently, looked at a parts vehicle a couple of weeks ago (every panel was damaged).

There was a series 2a or 3 wagon at the wreckers where I got Wombat. It had a lot of rust in the chassis and was full of rubbish, but seeing I was comparing it with Wombat, and she was the more sound of the two, I can't really remember what sort of condition she was actually in. Sitec might be able to chime in on this one.

I bought a trailer load of parts once and had a 1963 wagon thrown in for free, passed it onto a mate an it is in the film "Tracks" as a media field vehicle.
It was a good car to drive once the landy 4 motor got put back in.

basically it was straight, only missing the safari roof, the biggest rust issue was the rear door frames. It was fitted with a remote brake booster that made the brakes extremely touchy, if I had driven one of my other series trucks then drove this one the first braking manoeuvre usually resulted in tyre smoke and noise! followed by a lot of laughter!

I have noticed thatGumtree is a pretty good place to look for the Series models. Hardly any turn up on Carsales etc. I still have a soft spot for the Series 3. I grew up with them and they are the reason I have my new Defender!

That is a nice looking example of a late 2A station wagon.
