Metallic clunking sound on corrugation

I have had this issue since new but as I have trouble reproducing it at home for LR I thought I might ask you guys

When driving over corrugations or rough road I hear the metallic klunk sound from inside the car. It is hard to pin point while driving but I think it may come from the steering wheel column.

Does that make sense or even possible.

It does not happen all the time but is consistent when I hit rough stuff.

Any ideas ?

The two noises that I have had in my car on corrugations are:


1. The wheel nut covers rattle, heard with the widow down.
2. The clunking which comes from the lower control arm bushes. That sounds like your issue but it would not have been present from new. It gets worse and worse until you realise that you have to change the bushes.

My D3 suffers from a 'rattle' as each front wheel rides over rocks or uneven terrain. Has done so, since I bought it used a few months ago. I'm pretty confident that mine is the lower steering shaft, either slop in the splines, or universal joint.

I've seen a service bulletin, I believe it's included on the owners manual (from the AULRO online Shop) for this problem, the fix is a new lower shaft.

I'll see if I can find the info, but if you haven't done so already, I highly recommend the aforementioned CD-ROM.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. What you describe is exactly what the lower front bushes feel like. I thought the same as you and was skeptical when the repairers said it was the front bushes but replacing the control arms fixed the problem. At 200,000km mine now has none of that feeling of clunking in the steering.
