    Crickets In My D4

My MY13 SE D4 has just developed a sound when idling or moving slowly, that sounds just like crickets chirping. It is probably there all the time but obviously can't be heard when going at road speed.

For the life of me I cannot locate it. At first I thought that it was coming from under the bonnet but lifting the hood didn't make it any louder. I then walked around the car and am now uncertain to where it's actually coming from at all, as it's quite clear even at the passenger doors.

I'm 51 and after years of heavy music, jet noise and guns my hearing isn't the best and is distorted by constant tinnitus.....so that ain't helping. I'll need to get one of my kids to help, see if they can locate the source.

But I thought that I'd ask if anybody else has had this issue? This is D4 number two and I've never experienced it before.

    Cheers.

If it is inside, the bottom glovebox latch can make noises. The A-pillar trims outside can too - and the sound of both of these travel through the body, making them hard to locate the source.

A shame about the noise in your D4. Sorry I have no idea what it would be.

Is it a constant speed, it doesn't get any faster when moving or with engine revs.
    Cheers Baz.

Now I've listened a bit harder...

Very obvious at idle (constant speed). A quick blip of the throttle and it vanishes. I think it may be present at constant speed at higher revs but it's harder to get the rev to hold in the right spot .... and then engine noise drowns it.

Belt noise or a bearing on one of the front pulleys.

Although i have never heard of belt noise on a D3/4.

That was where my money was ..... but even standing over the engine with the bonnet up ... I can't put a finger on it's origin ....really weird.

Anyway ... goes into LR on Wednesday, so here's hoping :-)

    Problem Found

Apparently the culprit is a Turbo (exhaust?) downpipe with what was described as a defective weld which had perforated.

LR hold no spare, as they 'NEVER' fail .... LOL!!! On order from the UK.

Oh well, there goes my flawless reliability run .... still not too bad after over 18 months.

They must have put a temp patch on it though, as the noise has completely gone.
