    New Here

    Hi Guys,

In my life I have owned only 2 vehicles to date and am retiring the XJ Jeep that I bought new to replace my series II almost 20 years ago and I am again the proud owner of a Land Rover and have chosen an '02 Defender Extreme Td5 to get back into the world of Landy's.

I am Perth based however my vehicles tend to do about 50% Bitumen as a daily drive, 40% Sand and simple bush tracks and 10% hard core off road expedition trips.

I am interested in the views here specifically of West Australian based peeps on all those other forums out there about oil changes, oil brands etc. It appears most go for the 5K change and every second change do the filters. While I am no mechanic I have enough ability to completely overhaul my last engine a few times and change the suspension and drive train, so while I will have to spend a few months becoming reacquainted with the loveable quirks of the Defender I will be doing 80 -90% of what work needs doing either at home or at "M'Mates place". On that as a semi retired drifter and Adventure Tour guide if anyone is rebuilding their truck and wants a pair of hands let me know as it will assist me in getting to know the new Landy's.

    Cheers
    Jester

Welcome to the forum. Someone will come along and post details to the good oil relevant sections for you.

Most basic service intervals are 8-10k kms, which is what I do. I do both filters and fuel filter at the same time, they are cheap insurance as the saying goes. You can get a full service kit from the wonderful people at Roverlord Offroad spares, find them on eBay. I would just get them to add the sump bolt.

If you were in Sydney, I would welcome any help, but its a bit of a drive just to do some mechanicing.

    First thing.
Read all the inside info on the td5.
    Great motor.
But it does need a few things done to it.
    On a regular basis.
    ie injector seals. Loom mod.
First thing check your battery size.
N70 will not cut it .Needs a bigger battery.
Also like any Landy or older car.
    Carry tools.
Spare parts. Spare starter motor rebuild kit. And a snatch strap (for getting stuck toyotas and nissin's) and see there faces hide
And get yourself a nanocom. A must

    Just ordered my nanocom.

Now have dual battery system and 180L tank (main plus aux), tool box is always in the car when out of the city so that ones easy. just have to find clapped out starter on gumtree so I can pull the thing to pieces and have fun putting it back together. Lara is 90% ready for her first adventure with me behind the wheel (putting in new heavy duty axles and stainless clutch sleeves etc this weekend as I hear thats some of the most vulnerable bits
