Taking your Defender overseas

Has anyone here ever shipped their Defender overseas for an epic trip?
Having seen all the work behind the scenes in Charlie Boorman and Ewan MacGregor's Long Way journeys, I presume it would be hellaciously expensive and time consuming to obtain all the necessary permits, checks and authorisations, backup plans etc. Not to mention the microscope Australian Customs would want to run over it when you came back.

Interested to hear how it went, whether it was across the ditch to NZ, or a global adventure.

I imported my Defender a couple of years ago from Africa, quite easy and only about 3.5k from Namibia, customs was easy, had heard how anal Oz was... But considering I found a tree branch from our travels still on the roof rack they were not that thorough.

Have just had a mate ship his to India, wasn't overly expensive.

i would ensure it is a new one as an old defa would be near impossible to get clean enough to get it out of quarantine. i had to have a near new helicopter vacuumed as the quarantine crew found they could leave a handprint in the dust on one section!

Sounds like you got the hard core customs team there.
I wonder how the international competitions like the Camel Trophy and such managed it when their vehicles were submerged in the mud, earth, flora and so on in some of the most disadvantaged countries.

I have done several imports and had varying quality of shipping and quarantine inspection. One cost us an extra $650 to have the car fumigated and cleaned despite being cleaned up at the exit port.

If you shipboard car out remember that you should get permits to reimport from department of transport in Canberra.

I enquired a few years ago re transport to South Africa out of Perth. From memory it was around $7,000AUD. Was too steep for me at the time, but it all seemed pretty straightforward as long as you leave enough lead time, get all the paperwork sorted both ways, etc.

The last price I got was 5k (usd) from Melbourne to Europe (Rotterdam) Inc all shipping, taxes and handling using a 40ft container. Roll on/off was about 3500
That was 11 months ago.

Pricing up seemed as though Melbourne was the cheapest at the time. Which for us was a 1000km drive.
