    Hi Guys

    To buy?

    D3 Hse 150000klm tdv6 2.6L 2006 model
    $24,000

    Or (both 6 Gear box)

    D4 Hse 110000klm tdv6 3.0L 2010 model

Is this worth the extra $26,000 in technology etc.

My short answer is... No. Well, at least not to me.

They're the same motor, same gearbox, same suspension etc. The interior is different and obviously the tech is better.

A short summary of some of the advantages of D4 over D3:

    - Newer interior tech - bluetooth is standard, though if not on the HSE D3 ahould be easy to retrofit. Only the drivers window is auto on the 06 D3 - there are other little items too.
    - LR have resolved the issues in the motor in the D3. The oil pump housing is upgraded and the high pressure fuel pump doesnt have the leaking issue. (The D3 may have an upgraded oil pump housing, or you can fit one - its highly recommended by people here who have had to replace a motor due to a failed housing. The HPFP was recalled to fix the issue so if it hasnt already been done you should be able to have it done for free under the recall)
    - newer terrain response is much better off road.

The D3 HSE should have nicer seats than the base D4, as well as having electric seats, sunroof, and other goodies.

The main difference for me would be servicing of the transmission. If the D3 has not had the transmission serviced then allow another $7k for a rebuild. The D4, at 110k km should be ok if it hasnt been towing or off road much (though its still due for a service). The transmission FAQ in the D3/D4/RRS section has heaps of info.

For the price of the D4 you could have the D3 with more fruit and enough cash left over for a good holiday, mods or even a Disco 1 as a play toy.

    Cheers

    Dan

If you can easily afford the difference in cost then yes buy the D4.

    Note quite Dan.

    As Oztourer has found out

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...coolant-3.html

pre-2007 engines are EU3 standard. To replace it means a quite a few dollars more than a later (EU4) engine such as those coming out of a Ford Territory, due to all the engine ancillaries etc. needing to be matched to the engine.

The 3.0 does have some differences (e.g. twin turbos) but one similarity which my BIL found out is the coolant adaptor still sits on top of the engine and still gets brittle and cracks giving (in his case) fatal results.

The other things Dan mentions I agree with.

That's why I decided to go with the 2006 I purchased

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...ub-forums.html

as it had a low km engine, low km transmission and I was prepared to put up with it being a 9 year old vehicle with 9 year old plastics etc.

That said, I breathed a sigh of relief with I had the timing belts done last week as I am sure they were well past the 7 years - even though under the 168,000 kms.

I would agree with TerryO, if you are able to afford the cash go the D4. Happy hunting.
    Cheers, Dale

Owned a 2005 D3 HSE and now a 2010 D4 HSE - significant differences in equipment refinement...particularly the integration of phone, 4x4 info (nice but not a necessity) and NAV - (note the NAV needs a visit to LR to upgrade the maps in the 2010 model) and the cabin refinements are "nicer". On paper they are similar specs, if you sit in them side by side, a definite difference.

Done a few more k's in my D4 but the 3.0 bi turbo is simply great to drive. I've had no mechanical issues (to date) except for front lower bushes which at 110ks, if not done expect to have to do. Love the 600nm.

The difference in price correlates to depreciation...which is K's, vs age, vs cost of money. Will the $50K D4 be worth $26K in 4 years...probably.

If you can do the dollars...do a better deal on the D4 and take it

One more negative/negotiating point on the D3: the timing belts are meant to be changed at 7 years or 168,000km -which ever comes first. What is the bet that they haven't been changed? Almost 10 years old... almost 3 years overdue.

Expect to pay at least $2k to have them replaced.

Thanks Narranga for you correction. I saw TDV6 and assumed it was the 2.7 forgetting they used to call the 3.0 a TDV6.

I also didnt think about the EU3 vs 4, but thats only an issue if your engine blows up, which hopefully it doesnt.

    Happy decision making!

    Cheers
