Spare wheel winder blank - Long range tank

Hi all, I recently had a long range tank fitted to my D4 and obviously the wheel winder was removed. When I had a look under the interior winder cap I notice that I could see the tank, so just a hole where the winder was . I'm interested to know how this has been treated for others with long range tanks.
I asked the installer if it was correct and they said this is normal. I assume dust will enter here under the interior carpet with just the rubber cap to stop it from entering the cabin.

I really just want to know if everyone's tank is fitted without a blank plate over the winder hole. If that's the way it is done then I guess that is fair enough. I understand that if I have the windows up the cabin pressure will prevent dust ingress (though I will find out when I reach corner country).
That said, it is counter intuitive to me to remove the winder and leave a hole so I reckon I'll be fitting some kind of cover myself.

A good reason to seal it would be forced water into the cab in creek crossings or deep puddles at speed.

Never thought of it, but have done plenty of dirt roads and deep creek crossings and not had any issues. Now I will have to check.

Also heading to the cape so there is a very real chance of that. Not likely unless I'm stopped but you never know.

The rubber access cap inside the vehicle - just smear some silicone around it and put it in place - it's a grommet of sorts..
