Galloping Brumby

now that I have been relegated to driving the brumby to work,
A few facts have emerged,,

Our 1988 1800cc 4 speed has done a touch over 210,000klms.
It has been serviced by Suburu its entire life(dont blame me---)
and is in good condition for a 17 year old car.

The trip to the barge takes 28 minutes,
the distance is 42klms

average speed? around 90kph.
think about trying to average 90 over just 28 mins---(with 2 x 80 and 1 x 60 zone)

fuel?
try 10klm to the litre
or,
30 mpg

what really brought all this about was thinking of a replacement for the Suby,, I saw an article in the RACQ paper and a 5 year old pulsar gets around 8kpl(it might have been a 2litre-but still--)

maybe I'll just re-power this one,,
wonder how much a Rx turbo is worth,,,,

Up until this time last year I had a 1980 suby wagon with 2" lift and 14" wheels. Had more clearance than my standard discovery, handled the sand much better and never had to let the tyres down. Rear suspension had far more travel than the disco but the front was pretty tragic. The only downside was a weak clutch for offroad work and with the bigger tyres low range was not low enough. Actually I used it offroad rather than the disco - I wouldn't want to get it dirty would I.

Even though the suby had only done 450,000km, I got rid of it and upgraded to a Freelander - the freelander is much safer with its airbags and ABS brakes but the suby is far better offroad.

For that second vehicle to supplement your Landrover - you couldn't go wrong with a 80s Subaru.

Are you serious, more rear travel than a Disco? I am not doubting you but i cant picture that. Brumby's are only the utes arent they?

Stick with the Brumby pedro, they are a top little car, when looked after. Matt

With 15 years and 250,000 km in the subaru and 11 years and 100,000km in the disco - I can assure you the wheel travel on the rear of a suby is greater than the rear of a standard disco. From normal ride height the wheel does not go up all that much but the wheel drops a hell of a lot.

I agree though - the suby is a great car.

Dont sell it,get a WRX motor/gearbox from a jap importer,they make Brumbys into serious playtoys. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
They do fit but there is a fair bit of engineering needed in the engine bay.

BTW, Brumbies are still sought after by the cockies out here in the sticks, and I know of about half a dozen running around here at the moment.

I only sold my 83 wagon (same body shape as the brumbies) about a year ago, and it has to be one of the hardest vehicles to change a tyre on. You have to jack the body up a looooong way to get yhte back wheels off the Ground.

Great vehicles, although the engine in mine was starting to get pretty stuffed at about 200,000 kms. Not a lot for a subaru, but it was an ex dept of mines vehicle :wink:

Great little car especially off road, providing you only want to drive around the farm with nothing more than a bale of hay in the back.

Almost bought one until they were tested & voted the most dangerous car on the road to survive an accident of all time by the NRMA and most car magazines of the day.

But given the chance now would still buy one for farm work & spotlighting.

No worries, i believed you, i just couldnt picture it that all. I know they are a top car, a mate had one at uni, he has now upgraded to a new BA falcon ute, but he loved his subi. Matt
