    D4 3.0 P0087 Fault

    D4 wouldn't start momentarily last week. Battery cranked the starter motor just fine, however short hesitation until engine start. Upon restart later that arvo car took longer 3-4 seconds to start, so I took it home. Just as well, through engine system fault, went into limp mode, and could not start later that arvo at all.
    NRMA pulled up P0087 Fault (Too low for system pressure or Fuel Rail). Flat bed to the dealer pronto even though out of warrant MY10). They have diagnosed High Pressure Fuel Pump from the code, not even looking at other fuel system components which worries me.

    This is a top-off repair, and have recommended rear belt changed. I am just shy of 150k, with timing belt due at 168k, so will get that done as well. Include a B Service which is due, and they want to charge me over $10k! I have a quote from a well known independent in Sydney for $7.3k, however he made a few interesting points. He hasn't seen HPFP fail in D4, aside from loading the tank with petrol. He also mentioned is a ***** of a job.

    Another independent reckons he can change pump from underneath, no top-off required however this worries me as have had issues with shoddy work from his mechanic (not him).

    Has anyone seen problem HPFP / P0087 and engine not firing before?

    D3, yes, D4, no.

    Unless they've done a lot more diagnosing than you think they have, I reckon they've gone straight for the expensive option. Several other options though, the low pressure pump, the fuel filter, the fuel pressure sensor.....

    Get it in writing, and if the expensive option doesn't fix it. Don't pay....

    Body off is not a horror story, it's a very effective and sensible way to work on a vehicle.

    P0087 turned out to be related to the low pressure fuel pump (in tank) and fuel filter.
    Perhaps these cheaper potential causes should be looked at first.

    As already mentioned...

    Body off is not a big deal, its by design...
    I really have no understanding when I hear from customers that another repairer has sprouted they can do the job without removing the body...... I mean yeah some jobs, sure ya can.... but why would you?

    Jobs I do that are far easier with the body off, keep in mind, easier to me equates to doing the job better include D3 high pressure pump replacement, D3 turbo replacement, D4 secondary turbo replacement....

    But I'd agree with the other repairer in saying, unlikely to be the high pressure pump, even on a D3 its rare. Id be starting with the basics...

    Follow up

    So I declined the offer from my local dealer of a $12k fix, including HP pump, 6x fuel lines and a few chains / belts. Had the car diagnosed by well-known independent instead. He bled the fuel system, inspected low pressure pipes n pumps and then could not fault it over a couple of days using live diagnostics. Been driving it a few weeks and all OK so far. I may have an intermittent or failing issue which will raise it's head again, however just goes to show how this dealership approached my fault. Thank you to Scott for some sensible advice.

    Did he also replace the fuel filter? Wondering if it was clogged.

    Just had the P0087 code myself. Had this come up about 8 weeks ago where it would drop the car to the bump stops. Alternator was only charging 13.8 to 13.9v so I changed it. Have been going 8 weeks without a problem. Wife drove to work at the start of the week car dropped to the bump stops again did it 5 times unill she got to work. Cleared the faults with the Nanocom. There were 7 faults the same ones I was getting before. She drove home got to within 1 k from home and it through up more faults. She turned it off and back on and got home. I checked the faults and a new one showed up P2290 injector control pressure too low. Plus 5 others. I purchase a new fuel filter during the day so I told her that you have too start from the cheapest part and work through. Took the covers off to change the filter. When I went to rotate the filter it was nilly undone off its mount. Put the new filter on and presto no more faults. The wife has driven it for three days now without a problem so all my problems were a loose fuel filter. So just a thought check the fuel filter. My D3 has the same filter as the D4. So a place to start.

    Yes, filter was checked as part of diagnosing. Was then replaced as had B Service performed at the same time...
