Very good question. I am planning to do the same.
I was going to ask Dave from Ashcroft and see if he knows
I want to fit an external cooler to my R380 and would like to know which direction the fluid flows currently as it has the pipe that loops forward and then returns to the box.
I intend to cut into the loop and extent the plumbing to an external cooler.
So if I am underneath the vehicle looking up at the pipe does the oil flow clockwise or anticlockwise?
Cheers,
Paul.

I think it picks up from the bottom hole and delivers to the top hole. So facing the thermostat, that would be clockwise.
The top hole is above the oil filler/level mark, which is why I say I think it picks up from the bottom.
So the ever reliable Dave from Ashcroft answered my email last night:
Hi,
1. Where do I mount the oil cooler? I have a 1998 300TDI 130 HCPU with air conditioning, bulbar winch etc?
Anywhere upfront, preferable infront of the aircon to get clean cool air flow
2. Should the oil cooler be mounted in the same horizontal plan as the oil adapter on the side the gearbox- i.e. is there enough flow pressure from the gearbox oil pump to push the oil uphill?
It can go up a little, max to top of rad
3. Which way does the oil flow out/in of the adaptor?
Out of the lower port
4. How do I now empty and fill the gearbox with the oil cooler fitted? Do I need to remove the oil cooler hoses and flush out?
Yes this would be best
5. Should I be installing a one way valve in the oil cooler line so I don't get false oil level readings at the filler plug?
This would be a good idea but LR don't do this,
Kind regards
