6 speed zf auto from RRS into D3?

    Hi all,

I have the option of purchasing a 2005 Range Rover sport zf 6 speed auto with low ks which I would like to put into a 2006 D3 TDV6. I've been searching the web trying to establish whether they carry the same boxes and I'm 99% sure they do. Could more learned minds please confirm?

    Many thanks John.

Yep - as far as I'm aware it's the same box. D3 / D4 (2.7 diesel like mine), RRS and Ford Territory amongst others.
    Cheers .........

The mechatronics unit inside the trans will need programming to suit your vehicle. If you can get the transmission serial number/ calibration code from the donor vehicle it would help.

The tdv8 6hp26 had a different spec number to the tdv6.

I replaced my L322 tranny with the same spec box from a later year model. I had to swap the mecatronic from the old tranny into the new one.

IIRC you fitted a MY10+ box to a pre MY10 so had different canbus protocols.

Sometimes different torque converters are fitted for specific engines as well as different clutch specs but if both engines were TDV6 then not likely to be a problem, other than as JC mentioned the possibility of needing the D3 s/w re-installed.

Swapping mechatronics would mean fitting a well-worn valve set into a barely used box so best to keep the RRS's mechatronics installed if possible.

    Check if it's a 6HP26 or 6HP28....
    The 28 won't work on the 2.7...

Correct Graeme, but the ZF spec number was identical. I will be getting the valve body swapped over later when it has its first tranny service at 50,000km. However, will keep the original TCU.

    mmmmm

Andrew from Les Richmond's preliminary diagnosis was torque converter. Second opinion on this from a tranny specialist is definitely gearbox related.

I'm wondering whether i go down the path of an entire gearbox refit with low kms or an overhauled torque converter. Gearbox is 2k and the TC is $700.

Not sure how to move on this at the moment.
