The rusted bits inside the chassis are the crush-tubes, which stop the chassis being squashed when the bumper is bolted on. I replaced mine with some tube welded at top and bottom; and afterwards welded a square cap on the front,

SubscriberHi All, today was my second day of dismantling my 109" ex army (GS) 2a. Today I removed the bull bar and bumper to find the bumper mounts very rusted. I knew there was rust here from when I inspected the vehicle before purchase, and fortunately the chassis is structurally sound, the rust is only in that section where the bumper four bolt holes are on both sides.
The bumper mount looks like it "sits" in the chassis itself (see pic), so presumably it's a separate part that is welded in. So, does anyone know if it's possible to buy replacement bumper mounts that I can weld in ?
Thanks
John

SubscriberThanks for the info guys, I didn't realise there were crush tubes in that pile of rust. I think for my situation I don't have much left to weld crush tubes on to, as I think I need to replace the top, front and bottom of that section and as well as the crush tubes, so can I buy that "U" shaped piece with crush tubes already made up and weld it in as one piece ? Cheers, John

Probably; but it is not difficult to fabricate each side and weld the corners together. Make cardboard templates to aid in the manufacture.
You will need to locate the spring-hanger-eye accurately though, so make a distance gauge that fits into the front and rear spring-hangers on the chassis, before you tack the hanger onto your new metal,

Or you could buy replacement front "dumb irons" and weld them on
