The 2.2 has been around longer and in many different vehicles. The 2.4 in the defender does have some cooling issues and heads have been know to go, not as common on 2.2s.
The 2.2s can make slightly more power. The radiator is also better on the 2.2s than the 2.4 apparently, Bruce Davis told me this so ill take gis word for it

Ok cool, so the problems with the heads. Is that a high kms issue?
Is there anything you can do to prevent these issues?

The 2.4s have a tendency to overheat more so than the 2.2s. They also go into limp mode more often as a result

Or or just stick with the 2.2?

Better radiator, needed if tuned no compromise ( this was recomended by dpl). Fan spacer replacement is recomended. Better flowing intercooler. Decat also helps. Let the engine breathe better and upgrade the cooling system and she'll be right

Search for Digger’s experience of the 2.2, which apparently the better motor of the two. Patience of a saint. Some have had no dramas.
