    Loud noise

On way back from Tassie, 200 Km's north of ML. Take the foot off the accelerator and loud grinding noise from geartrain somewhere?
No noise when engine drives wheels however with foot off and coasting same noise again(also out of gear made no difference).
Defenders now with Shepparton Dealer as they work out how to fix, thankfully still in warranty.
Has anyone else had this (particularly Puma).

    Only done 42000 Km's!

Can anyone shed some light on what it might be. I thought it may be clutch related.

    Cheers

    Simon

    I've had this mate.

If it's a whine, it's potentially the front diff crown and pinion wearing a bit.

If it's a grindy noise, it could be the prop shaft. I had this recently on the way back from Darling River country and it was the DC front prop shaft I'd put in when I lifted the suspension.
Any sort of movement in the shaft will cause this noise when it's not under load i.e. foot on the gas. Give it a good shake and see if there's any play in the universal joints, bearing etc

Not the end of the world and you're under warranty so all good.

I've now gone back to a standard front shaft and thankfully it doesn't foul (this was a concern for lifted Pumas, some of them required DC shafts but thankfully mine is ok.

    Thanks mate,

Given that I’d not adapted the ride height or made other gear train changes is this a fluke of LR’s stringent quality control ?(yes sarcasm, however I still enjoy my Deefer).

I’m still waiting for Shepparton LR to determine what’s required.

    thanks for the info Bobby.

I was going to ask about the springs in your clutch, as they are a known weakness, but I see you said being out of gear made no difference.

    Rear Diff

Been diagnosed as a failure within the rear diff. Dropped the fluid and full of metal so their now determining where the metals originated.

    Hmmmm, That's a tough one.
Maybe the metal has come from the diff slowly destroying itself?
