Tyre Load Index - Durability

A question for the tyre guru's please.

I have a 2014 RRS L494 with standard Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyres 235/65R19 rated 109V.

I was thinking of having them replaced with the same type of Pirellis at 255/60R19 size rated 113V.

These two sizes are supposed to be nearly identical in diamter, one 20mm wider in carcass. Tread type is much the same.

My query is whether the 113V rating would provide for a more robust, maybe more durable, and a stronger tyre? The 20" and taller wheel sizes all have wider tyres than this so I doubt if width would be a problem. Being wider there might be a small increase in fuel consumption but I can't think of any other reason why this might be a bad idea. Any thoughts out there, particularly the strength and durability?

Hey Simmo,

The load rating is higher primarily because of the increased width, so the vehicle load is spread over a larger surface area meaning the wider tyre can handle slightly more weight.

Regarding durability, I would say they are identical. If anything the bigger tyre may be more susceptible to damage as it has more tyre on the ground to pick up stones ect.

For increase durability you really want an LT (Light Truck) rated tyre that has a much tougher sidewall construction (usually 10 or 12 ply), though that will be a struggle to find in 19 inch configuration. Alternatively a different brand even in standard passenger car rating may offer a tougher construction than the Pirelli, such as the Goodyear Wrangler MTR, Duratac, Cooper Zeon LTZ and such.

Yep thanks for your response. The D5 with 19” wheels runs the 255/60 size so maybe in time the suppliers might come up with some variety in tyre types. But so far nothing is available in this diameter. The 255/55 size has a lower sidewall and not much use for me.

The Michelin Defender LTX M/S is made in 255/60R19 but still only 109H and not sold here.

Don’t forgot the Maxxis Bravo AT 980 in 255/55/19 that are an LT. These will be my next tyre. These are the only LT in 19”.

The higher load rating suggests a stronger carcass and the sidewalls of the wider size on the same rim will be slightly more protected. I would jump at the option.
