    What Would You Do?

In a previous post I mentioned that the infamous top out outlet housing let go while coming back from a trip. Long story short I thought I dodged a bullet in sustaining any damage as it was running as per normal. Wrong, looks like head gasket/s !

    2010 D4 3.0 TDV6 153,000km, Indie roughly quoted about 12K including belts, hoses etc.

Sooooo, what would you do? Get it all done and keep it? Fix it as cheaply as poss and get rid it? Rip it out and replace it?

Interested in your opinions, experiences, advice?

    Cheers
    Scott.

Yep, id fix, possibly with a new crate motor for total peace of mind. 12k is still cheaper than a new rig...

I love the vehicle, and apart from the alternator and LCA bushes, nothing else has failed.

After reading the post re "Future Proofing" it started me thinking, how much more is it going to cost me?

    Cheers

Excellent condition inside and out. New rear diff was put in when I bought it by dealer at 60,000 and both have had new oil since, tranny pan done, turbo drain done, always serviced.

You may think I've already talked myself into it and I have! Its the other half i have to convince.

    Cheers

I faced the same decision with my D2a recently, The head gasket was blown on this as well.
As i had previously fixed all the transmission and diff issues i bit the bullet and went ahead with the repair.
It was only $4,500 But in relation to the value of the truck it is a simmilar position that you are in now.
The D2a isn't the "Prettiest" D2 on the road But All the running gear and engine is now in tip top shape and I have absolutely No qualms about taking it anywhere So my decision to go ahead with the engine fix worked out just fine.
If you intend to keep the D4 as a long time project AND everything else on it is in tip top condition it is probably worth getting it fixed But I would shop around and see if you can get this done for less than 12K though.

12K sounds a bit steep. Like the earlier post said, a new crate motor is close to that price.

Would really depend on future plans I'd say Scott. We pay a premium to maintain the most comfortable and versatile touring 4x4.

Either way i'd go with either a crate motor or something like this"$6500 - USED, LOW MILEAGE 2.7LT TDV6 ENGINES COMPLETE WITH UPGRADED CRANKSHAFT, UPGRADED OIL PUMP, NEW TIMING BELTS (EXCHANGE) DISCOVERY 3 (2006 ON)" from https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/rivervale/engine-engine-parts-transmission/land-rover-engines-2-7lt-tdv6-td5-tdci-puma-/1148270158

I don't know Aztech, so do your research.

You already know the elephant in the room, the transmission will eventually need to be rebuilt just like any other car would. Mine was rebuilt at 190,000 so would be a much easier decision.
Other things to consider of course are budget. All well and good to recommend to you to sell it and fork out another $20k(after selling) for a newer 2016/17 model, if you have money unlimited funds, sure.
You've probably spent hours building what is the perfect tourer for you too, which you would have to start from scratch with if you sold it.

    Good luck!

Edit: They don't list any 3.0l's Be worth a call though.
