Ohh dear, where has all the power gone?

Symptoms, lack (total) of performance at low revs, even had to take a run up to get onto my drive way and that's not steep.

    D3, 2.7 diesel with a Black Box computer tweak, 270,000 K.

It has felt like it was trying to start off in third gear it is that sluggish, off to the indee.

Now all the symptoms and effects.

Sluggish off the mark, will not hold speed on hills, turbo is not working correctly them power comes on and off we go, trailing huge clouds of black smoke. The smoke can be overcome by backing off or dropping a gear or two, getting the revs up.

My workshop can't look at it for several days yet, they are booked out that far in advance (it's been there a week already), they are suggesting either a stuck open EGR valve or the turbo variable side is stuck in the fast lane!

My problem with both these diagnoses is that when it is 'going' it is putting out so much black smoke and really feels as though the turbo is doing it's job..

Can anyone shed any light on this matter, had it happen to their V6 diesel and if so what was the outcome?

Can't say I'm looking forward to the bill either.

    Cheers

    Mike

    Looked at that

Surely that would show up when the turbo is really working.

That was the workshop's first 'hope' but they looked at the hose, said they were hard but not at fault.

Black smoke = oil, white/grey smoke = unburnt fuel. Perhaps turbo seal fail with lubricating oil being burnt ?

    Please explain!

Thanks Justin, but can you explain to me why no power down low when the pipe wouldn't have much pressure therefore split closed, no whistle or escaping air noise when it does pressure up. I just can't get my head around it.

    cheers

    ???

I thought blue smoke was oil, black smoke was unburnt fuel and white smoke was a busted turbo or water in the oil.

Black smoke equals partially burnt diesel, white is fully unburnt diesel or water. If white and diesel, usually an injector issue.

    EGR valve

Well it was the EGR valve stuck open but the price of parts is staggering, $165 for a blanking plate and $65 for the gasket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers and thanks to those who assisted.
