From bad to great in a week

Hi everyone. This is the first time i will have ever posed on any type of forum. Have been reading through many posts in the last couple of weeks in this section as i started to look for a disco4. I have in the past only had 200 and 300tdi’s.

i found a silver disco 4 in WA close to my house. All seemed a bit to good to be true. $25000 for a 2012 2.7 tdv6 with 169000 on the clock. Went and had a look. Paint work wasnt great but interior was good. My hunch told me that the paint was like a high km car but dash said otherwise. Flicked through service book and revs check looked good at a glance. Quick spin round the block, drove nice, better than what ive been used to for years. My wife pushed me to hurry and buy it. Such a bargain would not hang around long. So i parted with $22000 cash and drove home. On the drive home i could hear a noise in 5 gear. Sounded like a loose worn box. The next day i am looking in the handbook to see if there was anything else on touch screen i could do. That is when i found another sevice book. My heart sank when the last entry was at 377000kms in 2016. I checked the other book. Checked the detailes at the beginning of book. All the same vins and engine numbers.

Once monday came i started my hunt to find the truth. Rang all company’s out of both service books. The low km book all were fake or recently for sale businesses. The high km book was true and to my even greater horror i find the last time one company changed an alternator on the poxy thing was at 447000kms!! Got hold of previous owner and after a few days got all my money back with the threat of legal action. My suspicion is that he knew for more than one reason but i wont go in to that. This is more writing already than im used to doing.

With my cash safely back in my pocket i went on the hunt again. Found a great 2012 3.0 sdv6 in white. Its the nicest car i have ever owned with some nice extras already on it. I can not beleive my lucky escape from the other pig of a thing. So now i can atleasted say i own a well loved example of a great car for my family. I know people will say to report the other car and not let it get back in circulation but as he has had all my details from transfer papers ect i hav chose to walk away. Plus the way it had been done felt like organised crime more than just someone trying their luck.

Well, at least a 2.7D with 447,000km is something to celebrate as other than gearbox that was not sounding old and full of rattles.

Was it full of red dust as you’d have to be a taxi to rack up those kms in the metro area.

Was it WA delivered?

What a lucky escape!

Stories like that make me shudder at how blaze I was when I bought my D4 (and every car before it). Perhaps someone with the expertise can write up a pre-purchase inspection list for the non experts amongst us.

What was the price on the new one? I suppose you always have to keep in mind the old adage "if it's too good to be true.."

Lastly, how can one of us report him for you instead? This could have been any one of us next

The car was clean inside. Engine bay pretty good. Some debris in with the master cylinder box. Nothing much. Was brought and owned in wa its whole life. One woman owner from new. Sold to her neice a year ago and traded in recently is what i found out.

Then i brought of a guy who claims he owned since 2014.
I was quite impressed to see thay can do them kms. But i just didnt want to own one that high.

One owner from new and nearly all landrover history. He only had a medium camping trailer and you could tell he loved the car. So differnt from a week ago you wouldnt beleive.

Extraordinary high kms per year av. 75,000km+.
Have to be weekly running back and forth to Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Geraldton or Albany and be reasonably well known car you would think.
