    Series 2a rego vehicle type

    So we all know that the Series are very versatile, can be a ute, a wagon and even topless. If I want to register the S2a with bench seats out back on the 2a (pre-seat belts), can one do this as a ute or do I need to register it as a wagon for the seats to be included?

    I plan to use it as a ute most times but will change it to a wagon when I need to carry stuff securely or out of the elements, but dont want to lose the ability to carry people out back.

    On that note, can one carry people out the back of a ute if it has seats (just curious)?

    If you want to carry bodies in the back, it would need to be registered with the seats. Tempory removed of seating is allowed ( in Qld at least ) without engineering.

    Not at all. If the can be unbolted and refitted without structural changes, it is deemed temporary.

    In Qld if your vehicle is unregitered & you take for a RWC with the the seats in the back the inspector marks the RWC with the number of seats 3, 5 or 7 & Qld Transport will register as per the number of seats on the RWC. But if it is already registered as a 3 seater & you fit the seats in the back you are in trouble .

    I registered Jade with no roof, seatbelts, and seats in the back in Victoria....... got a roadworthy certificate in this configuration then made it official at Vic roads

    They asked me what the seating capacity was and I said five, two in the back and three in the front, I think more seating capacity means more revenue to them, Rego was/is quiet exxy $700 plus per year

    I have since refurbed and added hardtop

    Hopefully Tasmanian bureaucrats are equally understanding......roadworthy certificate is first step here in Victoria

    Make sure you register it as a ‘utility vehicle’ this then allows it to be any variant as these can be anything from a Ute to a station wagon

    The description 'utility vehicle' is likely to vary from state to state - for example, I have not heard of it being used in NSW! Check with your local authority what to call it. In NSW, you are only given the options of the body types listed on the computer for that model, although this can be changed if you want to persist, but it will have to go to head office!

    Funnily enough, when I used to have a Minimoke Californian in NSW many moons ago, the transport dept classed it as a commercial vehicle, ie utility vehicle, even though it had rear seats. I argued with them every year, how can it be a ute if it's registered with rear seats, to no avail, as it was too hard for the plebs in the transport department to get their minuscule brains around it. It cost me more for rego, but back in the day before all the rules changed I used to have a lot of fun with the parking cops when I parked it in the loading zones. It usually went like this;

    Me, Why are writing me a parking ticket mate?
    Them, Because you are parked in a loading zone son.
    Me, 1, dont call me son, because I am not your son and 2, I can park here for 20 minutes if I want too.
    Them, no you cannot.
    I would wait until he was almost finished, then pull out the red rego papers stating commercial vehicle & watch him tear it up.
