Ignition Switch Problem

My trusty TD5 has taken to turning itself off after starting up. :x
The problem seems to be a worn ignition position detent in the barrel. if I let the key go from the starter position it goes straight back to the accessory position killing the engine.
I need to release it gently and it then stays put in the ignition position. Just started doing this at 53k.

Any one else had a problem? I hope to get it fixed under warranty.

Do you have a lot of keys on your keyring? I know that having a lot of wieght hanging off the ignition is not supposed to be good for things.

Well it finally died. No accessories or igniton

I was trying to leave work today, turned the key and all the little lights went out. Stripped off the steering column covers and removed the instrument panel. All was revealed, the back has fallen off the ignition switch. .

Ah well, LR has to pick it up and truck it to the workshop now.

Just think of it as a cheap Turbo Timer.

Only encountered this with an old Dato that we had to disconnect the switch from. Kept the electric switch so we could just turn it to the desired position.
Hope they fix it fast.

Pretty common fault, the wires for the ignition switch seem to be under slight tension, which ultimately brings things undone. We keep a switch in stock and replace them at a rate of one every 3 months or so (not all on the same vehicle&#33.

Switch replaced by yours truly. All is well again. I also disabled the steering lock whilst I had the lock apart.
