D3 or D4 Front Door Replacement

Has anybody replaced a front door?

Does a replacement door fit well, how is the fit adjusted?

I have looked at my manual but there is not much on this.

I have a gouge in my door and the option to get a second hand one in the same colour, changing the door will be cheaper than the bodyshop, I have had a quote for the repair.

Any hints tips greatly appreciated, I suppose if you have changed a rear door it will be similar. I am comfortable with swapping the loom/electrics over.
