D3 TDV6 Rough idle night revs on startup

Recently purchased disco 3 has developed a slightly annoying problem on startup. It seems to do it everytime. Warm or cold, sometimes doesn’t do it if you shut it down then start it again.

Basically when you start the car it starts fine, but idles lower revs, vibrates the car and no throttle response. It won’t rev.battery light flickers

Wait 5-10’seconds and idle picks up, and sounds fine. Drives absolutely fine no issues at all. Only on start up. No other warnings in the dash. Recently serviced 2,000kms ago.

Any ideas before I send it to MR or someone else in Brisbane. Any recommendations?

I would go see them. If it was mine I would be looking at fuel pressure. You could change the filter or confirm the low pressure pump is working yourself. If the rail pressure regulator has failed it will drain the rail to tank. The fuel system will then have to work hard to get enough pressure in to run.

Yes happens to me if I do not wait until the glow plug light goes out - and in Canberra's real cold mornings I go through two glow plug cycles before starts just to be sure.

I double glow it every time when cold to start, just used to the old td42 needing double glow every time too.

Will change the fuel filter, see if that makes a difference before I book it in. If you have any other ideas or checks to do that would be great. Don’t mind working on it if I can do it at home.

    Regards,

First port of call would be looking for error codes. Don’t suppose you have an iiD handy?

Glow plugs don't last forever either. Easy to test them with a multi meter. A few dead will give you that issue. I'm used to cars trying to rev but doing it poorly when to cold. It's free to check but

Turn the ignition on and off when the light goes out and then back on and start when the light goes out a second time.

Note the system has the ability to read temps so if the outside temp is hot enough as in summer, the glow plugs do not come on anyway and no light.

The no glowplug cold start is noticeable with a pungent unburnt white smoke diesel smell
