Strange Vibrations - Fading in & out wheel shimmy @ 80-100 km/hr

Hi All,

I have been getting a strange wheel shimmy on my 2015 110. Tyres have been road force balanced and wheel alignment done.


The shimmy is slight but I need to get it rectified, if I can find the problem.

At highway speeds I can have smooth driving and as I go around a long curve on the HW the shimmy will fade in and out. It lasts about 10 seconds and then goes smooth again.

I have checked the bearings and there is no movement, and am thinking this may be a swivel housing seal or CV joint issue. Anyone else experience this and found the source?

Swivel pre-load too low, panhard rod clevis bolt loose or bushes buggered or even a buggered shock can cause shimmy, although with a dodgy damper you really need to hit a bump during cornering to set it off

When the alignment was done, did they give it toe out?
A lot of shops that have never done a full time 4wd Land Rover before set toe in instead of toe out

Thanks Rick. Just checked and they are set at 0 for both left and right. There was no change in the shimmy. It was same before and after alignment.

0 will be fine.

The specs are 0-2mm toe out

Tyre condition? I have had some really weird vibrations with tyres that are down to their last 25%

Try a tyre rotation had similar problem or you may have to buy new front tyres

Tyres have >70% thread left. I have rotated tyres a couple of times now with no luck. I'll start with bushes and the the swivel preload, seals etc as Rick mentioned. Steering Damper is in good condition and I have tried a couple of different ones to see if it was the damper and am sure thats not it.

Did you re-balance the tires? It's usually good practice to re-balance the tires when you rotate them. I've always done this and had no problems.

Another thing to look at is perhaps your suspension bushings need replacing already.

Checked the panhard bracket bolts that attach to the chassis on the driver side today and seemed to need a bit tightening. Checked manual and tightened to 123 ft lb as per manual. Shimmy was reduced quite a bit. I think I'll do the panhard bushes next as they probably deteriorated a bit from the vibration. I am leaning towards genuine bushes but would poly pros be better?
