Compressor Whine

Hi All,

My MY13.5 has just started occasionally making a whining/whistling noise, which I assume is coming from the compressor. It's done it about 3 or four times in as many weeks, whilst car has been idling. It sounds like something spooling up and then stops.

I assume that's not good thing?

At idle the turbo(es if yours is a 3.0L) will be spinning. After 3 minutes, the secondary is also activated to ensure oil circulation.

You could have a slight leak in the intercooler tract?

If suspension compressor, it could be the motor or compessor itself. The former is unlikely to fail, the latter can suffer from worn ring and seals, you can get service kits for the compressor, or complete replacement units.

Are you getting any error codes?

I don't know if it's the same noise but mine has a noise that i finally tracked to the belt tensioner, not the bearing but the joint where it swivels, I think the spring inside is making the noise. If you can get some WD40 into the area it sorts it out short term.. week or two.

With mine once the alternator finishes it's initial start up charge the noise goes away, presumably due to reduced load. I replaced the alternator thinking it was that.

Yeah I have an SE with the 3.0L. I recently removed the middle exhaust baffle because it was damaged and sounded like it had an internal failure. It was rattling at idle and was getting worse by the week. The exhaust is a lot more 'vocal' now and you can hear the primary turbo waste gate dumps very clearly whilst driving.

You can't hear this whining noise inside the car, only if you happen to be standing next to it at idle. I've only heard it since the exhaust got done, so maybe it is the noise of the secondary. There is an exhaust note change just before it occurs, so I assumed that was the alternator loading the engine as the compressor kicks in. Maybe I'm wrong

I'll have to experiment more.

I'm not getting any warnings on the dash and unfortunately I don't have a diagnostic tool.

Did you remove it DIY or get it done? I'd love a bit more exhaust growl. On my wish list is a Legend X 409 stainless 3" mandrel bent exhaust, but the list ahead of it is long

I was originally concerned about just taking the car to any exhaust place but definitely wasn't going to take it to LR, as they would charge an arm and a leg. So I went to MR Automotive in Redcliffe for advice and they stated that any reputable exhaust place can fit or fabricate a replacement but some folks opt to remove it completely.

They recommended Jack Beedham's Exhaust & Brake Centre, as they use him regularly and he is familiar with LRs, but when I went in it was chaotically busy. A few days after that visit I happened to be talking to a friend who stated that she grew up with Rob Bliss, who has an exhaust place at Geebung. He was super busy too ..... COVID Cash .... go figure .... but fitted me in. Rob repeated MR's words and stated that lots of guys get the baffle removed even when serviceable, just to get a bit more exhaust sound. I like how quiet the D4 is but also didn't mind the thought of a bit of growl. ~$200 sealed the deal, Vs close to a $K I imagine, for something else to be fitted or fabricated. He literally just cut off the baffle and stuck a straight section in it's place, leaving the tailpipe mufflers in place. Nothing special.

It is quite a different sound and I think the car is running a bit better, which I was told may occur as the engine will breathe better. I could be imagining things though ... LOL!!!

You do hear a lot of waste gate action and gear changes .... especially as the 8 speed changes so often. The car has a definite rumble sound now :-).

...... and apparently you can hear the secondary turbo ....

Rob was actually pretty critical of the customers who do that ..... made some comment about them being homeless, living in their car, with a really flash exhaust system LOL.

Didn't stop him serving them though .... busiest he's been in 39 years he said.

I will get the baffle removed and a straight section welded in. Friend of mine did the same with his D4 (now moved onto a D5...) sounded much better.

I've run mine with the safari snorkel intake facing backwards and with a filter sock on when on the beach and dusty bush tracks, crack the window open and you hear both wastegates through the intake, sounds really cool.

Well strictly speaking you can’t hear the wastegate as it’s exhaust side, but you can hear the effect of reverse flow though the compressor of the turbo on throttle lift off as air reflects with nowhere to go.
