ECU Update information

Howdy All

I have a GAP tool and know I can upgrade ECU firmware via the Fast Lane service but what I don't know is where to find info on what the various ECU upgrades may contain and what they fix etc. I don't have a TOPIX subscription and won't get one for this exercise, if that is a possible solution.

Any ideas?

Not having done it yet, I can't be certain. However, my understanding is that if you do a report on all the firmware versions of all the ECU's in your vehicle, you can punch that through to GAP and they can advise which ones you should update and why.

From my understanding they are pretty helpful and won't just flat out tell you to update them all "just because".

I haven't seen any good resources of what is contained in each revision. Though someone else might have a better idea.

Libertyts is spot on.

Run the read ECU function, it will check the entire vehicle and generate a report you can email to yourself.

The major update that’s worth it if you don’t have it is the latest Terrain response version - it’s a big improvement over earlier versions when offroad.

Don’t worry too much about other things being not the latest if they’re working ok (if it ain’t broke)

That's pretty much what the guys at GAP-diagnostic said when I asked them this same question. To be fair mine is a 2016 so already has fairly up to date software.

Got a reply back from Patrick at GAP in his usual prompt manner and he did say don't update unless something is broken but he also mentioned "LR do not provide details on updates" so he can not provide help in that regard. My current issue (actually had it since new) is the down shifting of gears when going around a corner then accelerating again. There is always a lag as it shifts down to a lower gear rather than predicting it needs to be in a lower gear and pre-empting the change, if that makes sense. Below is one of the ECU updates and I'm wondering if it might solve the problem. I have use the transmission adaption reset in the GAP tool with no effect and I'm not interested in driving in Sports mode.

I'm not sure if any of the updates solve/change that issue. It is normal behaviour though unfortunately. It can be pretty annoying, I agree.

For me, I smack it over to Sport as I come up to a roundabout and back across to normal once I'm out. I do it often enough that is a habit and my other vehicles are manual, so I would normally be doing something with my left hand in them at that poi t too. So it's not a big change for me.

Maybe one of the other fellas knows if there any changes in firmware for the gearbox. Good luck.

If you look on a us forum they call that the California shunt or similar, I also get this only on one road coming to s roundabout then turning right uphill.
Usually get a transmission fault error message and sluggish performance, a restart fixes it.

Thanks for the reply but I don't get any errors, just an untimely gear change I'd like to smooth out.

What Rocket Rod is describing is a common and fairly normal behaviour. This doesn't mean it's a desirable behaviour and it is definitely frustrating at the very least or potentially dangerous at the worst.

It isn't however a fault in most cases.

The transmissions are setup to keep the ride "smooth", keep fuel usage (theoretically) down and keep bad/inexperienced drivers safe in as many scenarios as possible. Unfortunately, LR seemed to have forgotten that going through a roundabout at 20km/h in 6th isn't ideal...
