D3 gear shifter issues.

Ever since i got the disco back on the rd after its dummy spit, the gear indicator light has been stuck on D and sport mode isnt working. Got time pull the console to check the shifter and i found some minor corrosion on a couple of pins of the shifter electrical plug, cleaned the plug and socket but issue remains. Possibly the shifter is toast but the little circuit that the wiring connects to only has one connection to the shifter mechanism being the lockout switch so unless it reads the position via a sensor of some kind i fail to see how this is at fault.
Gear selection in the dash works as normal, is there an external electrical device the reads the position ?

Shifter and wiring loom replaced and faults and error code have gone.
