Exhaust leak possible cross over pipe

So the disco that loves to give has given some more. So from the time I first got it it's had a egr circuit low code but no engine lights and no loss in performance so I never looked in to it . Any how now when towing it's down on power and smokes like a train but no engine lights just a low boost code and the egr code got under it the other day and the firewall is covered in soot quick inspection of the cross over pipe shows it seems to be intact I'm wondering if it's not the little j pipe that goes to the egr cooler that's not burnt out can't hear any tell tail signs of a cross over pipe is the problem. Leak is on drivers side. Anyone had a leak like this that has turned out not to be the cross over?
