    Defender Headlight problems

    Hello all,
my problem is i dont have any low-beam at all. I have a wiring upgrade, power getting through the light switch and also the headlight dipper switch no problem checked with test light, it come on when it should and goes off when it should. This is also the case a little further down the loom, just after the connector.
I have changed around all of the relays, both under the dash and under the seat, checked and changed around all the fuses but still no power getting out to the orignal headlight sockets on low beam, high-beam fine.
Any guesses as to what it might be?
    Thanks

Does the wiring upgrade have their own relays and fuses?

In my case, I had a wiring and socket upgrade that had their own fuses and relays as well. When I had an issue with my headlights before and everything checked out, it turned out that one of the fuses on wiring upgrade was kaputt. Changed it out and all is well with the world

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes it has fuses. They are all good I have 4 fuses on the upgraded loom. 2 low beam 2 high beam and the work fine, test light goes on both sides all four.
There is no power coming out of the original loom on law beam so it cannot trip the relays

Thanks for replying to my thread

    Sounds like the multifunction switch.

    Thanks for the reply.
No it’s not the switch. Blue and red wire (low beam) has power when in low beam and goes off when on high beam, plus the switch is only 12 months old.

Thanks very much for the reply.
which relay is it? I have tried switching relays but the result is the same.
There are 3 or 4 yellow ones, i have switched their positions around but it is the same.
How do i check for the power on the +/- and power on switching contact, please.

with the test light earthed on one end, the blue and red wire from the dipper switch the power goes off when it should and on when it should.

If your loom upgrade does NOT have it's own separate relays, the plastic terminal mounting base of your main headlight switch may have melted. pull it out and look at the back, check the function with a multimeter.

Thank you for replying, yes my loom does have its own relays, all four of them.

    hi gruntfuttock

check the relays and find out which one is high and low by operating the dip switch and listen/feel which one clicks on high beam and see if the other one clicks on low. if low doesn't click then determine what terminals are the coil (on base of relay ) ,with your test lamp connect to each one of these terminals on rely base (where the relay plugs in ) to see if test lights up on low . if not check either terminals with test lamp and other wire to a good earth ,if it does light up on one of the terminals you have a bad earth on relay base and similar to check if the positive by a known positive and the other side terminal on base .If light fails to light up there is no power at coil base.

if the low relay is clicking/picking up determine which is the supply and the switched supply. check other terminals not coil and with test lamp on a good earth find which one has power ,the other one is the one that goes to the light (you could put short from a known + to it and see if lights up low beam)

    hope this helps i
