ACT Electricity Charges

The ACT supposedly went fully "green" power a little while back - was advertised as being cheaper and fully green with no fossil fuel power generation involved in the power we use - yeah right . No one has explained to me where our power comes from when it is dark and there is no wind. I under stand that the ACT does not have an arrangement with Snowy Hydro to switch on at night and that Snowy Hydro only kicks in when the eastern grid needs the extra power - any way that is a side issue.

We were told that as green power was now cheaper ACT power bills would go down but a little while back we were told power prices would have to go up 10%.

I get a letter today from our sole wholesale power provider, which is also one of the two retail providers.

It says that of 1 Jul power prices will rise by 11.95% in the ACT.

They say that:
1. Wholesale costs have decreased 4.72%
2. Network costs have increased 2.7% but as expected.
3. The cost of ACT Government Green Schemes have increased 13.13% - wtf they were supposed to save money
4. The cost of National Green Schemes have decreased 0.1% - so the Nat scheme goes down but the local one goes up
5. Retail and other costs have increased .94% but not unexpected.

End result is our our costs are going up 11.95% when going green was supposed to bring them down, particularly annoying as national green costs are slowly coming down.

So when it becomes your State's turn to go fully green be wary - it is not necessarily the turning green but the management of it.

Whoever is 'running' that scheme is accountable. Contracted out perchance? Still accountable.

I used to do 'forensic' cost recovery stuff for a sustainable non-trawl fishing sector and I found it quite easy to identify the 'anomalies' and call to account increased costs that had no explanation.

Yes I know where to find the answer but it then becomes political which we cannot discuss here.

Some facts though.

The ACT Government is a Labor Government in Coalition with the Greens with at least one Greens member in the Cabinet and he is the Attorney General - not a political statement but a factual statement - you can google it.

The point of the thread is to highlight that the change to 100% green energy was sold to the community on the basis of price reductions and the opposite has occurred, so if your State decides to change to 100% green power be very wary of the follow on price increase, despite what is being said.

Our electric supplier down here in Tassie(aurora) has said our bills will be around 7.11% cheaper from July 1 this year.

Yes I realise there is only one wholesaler, but a quick look suggested resulting retail prices vary.

I suppose the other way to look at it is:

if they didn't go green, and maintained the staus quo with non green power generation, what would have the increase in prices have been by way of comparions to what they turned out to be.

In the modern world, price increases are a given .... you can't have wage growth without price increases .. you can't have share price rises without increases in profit growth .. so prices increase on top of that.

11.95% increase from one year to the next sounds like a case for the ACCC to get involved.
I thought there was regulation on utility price increases.
