FYI, You can’t move a brake piston by hand. You have to use a vice type clamp to wind them in.

SubscriberIn the bush heading to marble Bar WA with a very hot rear left wheel. Wheel has no wobble when off the ground although could feel a vibration when driving. Can rotate wheel and can hear slight grinding but think that's dust. Hand brake not seized on. Took of brake calliper and pads and disk look good. Could not push in the brake piston by hand which I thought I should have. Wheel takes about 20 min to heat up. Anyway continuing to MB to seek mechanical help there so will be off air for a few hours at least. Any suggestion to what might be the problem and also the best place for repairs either pt Hedland or Karratha would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a friend in the car, you could try a decent sized screw driver to push the pads & piston back. Pump the peddle & bring them back out then push them back in with the screw driver again.
Do that twice and see if you can feel a bind or improvement, you could compare to the opposite side.
Take the caliper back off and make sure the grinding noise is with the brakes not the bearing.
If you get stuck mare, undo the brake line and clamp it off. Take pads out too with it blocked off if their binding.
Cheers
Are you sure its not the wheel bearing?
Hi Rod, We recently had an issue that needed sorting when we were in Karratha. We asked for recommendations from friends that had previously lived in Karratha and they all recommended the Malley group and also mentioned Karratha Mechanical. However both were booked up and we ended up using Hunter Mechanical who could fit us in promptly which helped with our travel schedule. We thought they did a very good job and were pleased with their work.
Should you need to obtain parts, we found that Repco in Karratha were able to order in parts quite quickly, but as we had contacts in Perth we had genuine parts flown up to Karratha by Qantas Freight (drop off in Perth before 12.00 midday for pick up that evening.
P.S. (We did the Canning Stock Route with you a few years ago)

SubscriberThanks for all your replies. That's enough to go on with now. I'm speaking to my indi tomorrow so I'll diagnose things with him and let you all know the outcome.

I’d be checking the internal drum isn’t dragging,
Then I’d be checking wheel bearing.
Last, and least likely would be the calliper sticking.

Hi Rod, If Port Hedland is your stop over point you could try GBTK, 27-29 Leehey St Wedgefield, Adrian McRae.
Very helpful with the tray tow in from Sandfire Roadhouse and the follow up work on the rad hose. Paul was the key man if I recall accuratley, very helpful with lifts back into Hedland whislt we waited parts etc. We were introduced via RACWA
Good to hear you are out there still remember Ian and Gus, Tanami Munga etc 2016, cheers.

SubscriberFound out today that there reason for the rear wheel heating up was the park brake on the LH rear had seized on for some reason. I still don't why it happened though. Replaced all the rotors and park brake assembly on both sides. Photos show new Vs old shoes.
