    Gearbox overheating

On the way back from lake mountain we dropped wife in the city and D4 was running at idle for around good 25 minutes while waited my daughter got something from the shop. After that on the way from city stil in cbd the gearbox overheating warning came up. Kept going until it started limp mode. Stop at the side of the street for around 5 minutes, started the car and the warning light disappeared. Drove around 2 minutes and the warning light reappeared (still in cbd), kept going and the warning light disappeared on the freeway and that was it. It didn’t come back.

Seen the gearbox overheating warning light before in December when we got stuck in Melbourne cbd in the afternoon and disappeared after we parked the car for few hours.

The gearbox had just been serviced (oil change etc) around 30,000km (at 160,000km) ago at A&B automotive.

Should I be worried about the warning light? Anyone had experienced this before and know what was the issue?

    Thanks

Seems to me they haven't filled it to the correct level, you should never see the temp warning light, let alone in Melbourne in the middle of winter!

I am assuming from your handle that you have the 2014 facelift with the 8spd auto. On the previous ZF6 speed, correct fill is achieved with engine running, transmission fluid temp at 35 deg C and fluid dribbling from the fill point, and having cycled through all gears including park and reverse during the fill to get all the air out. I don't think the 8 speed is any different.

I'd also be asking them to check out the transmission and replace any damaged parts, at a minimum replacing the fluid they put in if its overheated, you'd be suffering from scored or carbonedup bronze bushes in the transmission, not to mention the solenoid filters and the rest of the valve body.

To give you some perspective, I've been towing my 3.0 Tonne "house" up in Far Nth Qld over past few weeks where ambient temps around 28 degrees.

My Scanguage shows the coolant temp going to 106 deg whereupon the fans come on and the auto trans oil is around 102 deg but no warning lights appear. This all happens when climbing a long hill of some sorts and as soon as I drop down the other side the coolant drops to around 95 deg and trans oil temp around the same.

On the flat, and at indicated 100kph in 7th gear at 1800 rpm the coolant is around 95 and trans oil around 90-95 deg.

I've been using Penrite BMV auto oil for past 80,000 klms and will change it when I return to Tassy.
