    SWB Rear brake shoes

    Hi,

I'm currently working on the rear brakes on a S2A SWB widelight.

I've seen several sets of shoes for sale for this model but with different part numbers.

I'm guessing the size of the brakes is the determining factor?

If so, how do you correctly measure the drums for size?

    Cheers
    James

Series 2a Landrovers all had brakes that depended on wheelbase and number of cylinders.

SWB (88") 10"drums working surface width 1.5" one leading, one trailing shoe, same front and rear.

LWB(109") Rear 11" drums working surface width 2.25" one leading, one trailing shoe

Front 4cyl. 11" drums working surface width 2.25" two leading shoe

Front 6cyl. 11" drums working surface width 3" two leading shoe

Drum diameter is measured across the inside of the drum, width is the lining width. 1" = 25.4mm

However, it is a relatively simple job to upgrade the brakes on a SWB Series Landrover by fitting LWB brakes, so you need to check what you have before buying parts. (This may have been done by a previous owner)
Also, note that Series 3 and the very last of 2a had larger wheel studs than earlier ones (16mm vs 9/16") so the holes in the drums for them are larger, and swapping hubs is even easier than brakes, so check this as well if getting new drums.

It is possible that your drums may have been refurbished to a slightly larger diameter, and in this case the new brake shoes must be finished to the same diameter (maximum permitted oversize 0.75mm)

Measure the internal diameter of the drums and report back.
in 50 years any number of previuos owners might have made changes, it was common mod to fit LWB brakes , so SWB parts will no longer be relevant.

oops . thats what JD just said

Well.. It didn't happen overnight, but it did happen!

Finally had a chance to measure the drum.

Rear drum is 10 inches internal from machined surface to machined surface.
