Diesel gas conversion

I have been thinking of doing a gas conversion to my Disco TDI and have been advised that I will have overheating problems and the valve seats will be pushed into the head due the higher operating temps and pressures.
Has anyone heard of these issues?

Sounds a bit strange. However, if you intend doing any mods like this you should fit an EGT first, to make sure your engine temps don't get too high. An EGT is the most useful tool for tuning a diesel.

Btw - the Tdi has an alloy head and hard steel valve seats, so VSR is highly unlikely.

if your diesel is old and tired the potential is there but it comes down to how much extra noise you want from it...

if your doing it for economy reasons go for it, if your doing it for more grunt then the potential for your problem exists, but then it also exists for any other "more power" solution you might apply except maybe more effecient intercooling.

Sounds like you have been talking to somebody who doesnt want the job.
If you treated it like a racing car and drove it to destruction maybe it wouldnt last.
The exhaust gas temp gauge would be very handy,especially with that heavy camper setup when you are touring.Best to get that first so you can establish what temps are normal to your vehicle.Ive driven trucks with them,its surprising how much the temps drop by droping a gear on a long hill,especially when you think the higher revs will create more heat.
Best part is you qualify for both the fed $2000 rebate and the WA $1000rebate fro LPG conversions.

Ring DieselGas (02) 4721-3675 and ask them. They are also Land Rover specialists (they do Landy work under their other name of KLR Automotive). In fact, if it wasn't for LPG work, they'd never have other brands of 4WDs in their workshops.

I have my Tdi 300 1996 defender 130 at Dieselgas/KLR right now waving it installed!

I read the for and against arguements and it seems you can find "evidence" for any side you want to take. but they have been doing the conversions for some time and I do not hear loud complaints on this forum? Ans at $3850 +GST plus Dyno etc if it did not work then i think we would hear about it.

Everything from power to economy,quieter, cooler etc!!

I think they limit the gas so as not to fry the engine.

As said above the Tdi is no race engine. If you do too much tweaking and heavy use of the loud pedal with any fuel then you will shorten the life of the engine etc.

I am hoping to see extended range, economy, a bit more power up the hills when towing, maybe a little quieter.

I have also bought a Disco 2 transfer box with 1.2Q gears. I am hoping the extra power down low will help off the mark in the taller gear and lower RPM cruising to quieten the Deafender a bit.

Should get it back friday and install the transfer case just before Christmas and test it on the way south boxing day.

Did you ask how much they'd charge to swap the transfer case while it's on the hoist?

Good to see it had arrived. My defender only just clocked 110,000k so i think it is in good shape for the conversion.

No I did not ask about fitting the TX case

I did think of it though.

I booked a courier last tuesday and paid for a 2 day service. they did not even pick it up till friday. And not yet notified of its arrival in sydney!!!

I have to ring them tomorrow so will ask about it then if i can get my hands on the TX case. What do you think it will cost? Got to be easier than crawling under the car. How long to do it at home?

Make some enquiries around the taxi industry. I notice a few of the maxi-taxis and wheelchair taxis are Toyota vans with diesel engines and LPG stickers on the number plates. They will have the k's up to be able to give opinions and horror stories if any. They will certainly be able to give comparative figures on operating costs. There is no creature lousier than a taxi owner.
