NPWS dont permit chainsaws in the NP's period. However this is to prevent people cutting firewood at will, if you have one in the car and there happends to be a tree down on the track it would have to be one helluva sadistic ranger to write you a fine for having it, or even using it when you are doing them a service. Its hard to police because if you are travelling around Oz and you have on in your car you cant exactly dump it when ever you want to go into a NP. I would just take it, and in any event there is a tree down, use it and then play dumb if a ranger comes along, as i said you are doing them a favour, you arent removing timber from the forrest nor are you cutting wood for your campsite.
