Chainsaw Permit

Do I require to get a permit from NPWS to use a chainsaw in NP's? I have been through the NPWS site and can't find anything to do with chainsaw permits.

I am led to beleive that an accredited chainsaw course is a pre-requisite before NP's issue a permit/license, for clearing fallen trees on NP's tracks.

Can someone clarify the situation using chainsaws in NP's and suggest an accredited chainsaw course between Sydney and Canberra.

I would assume if you come under the definition of an employee ie. you are under a contract of service to NPWS, you would require a license to perform work that requires it, under WH&S legislation. No different to if you were operating heavy machinery.Check with your local TAFE college, they will have a list of RTO's in your area who supply Chainsaw tickets.

To clarify it further, I am not an employee or contractor, just using the NP tracks and coming across fallen trees...

then as you are just a member of the public who can purchase a chainsaw without a operators ticket, you can do what you like.However if your injured in this activity you would of course have no comeback on NPWS. IMO.

you ought to check NP rules and may be different for each state

some NP you are not permitted to take in chain saw and or generators and if found to be carrying them can be confiscated and fines apply

NPWS dont permit chainsaws in the NP's period. However this is to prevent people cutting firewood at will, if you have one in the car and there happends to be a tree down on the track it would have to be one helluva sadistic ranger to write you a fine for having it, or even using it when you are doing them a service. Its hard to police because if you are travelling around Oz and you have on in your car you cant exactly dump it when ever you want to go into a NP. I would just take it, and in any event there is a tree down, use it and then play dumb if a ranger comes along, as i said you are doing them a favour, you arent removing timber from the forrest nor are you cutting wood for your campsite.

Oh, and tafe do the chainsaw coures. Matt

Disassembly (removal of blade and chain) qualifies as not having a chainsaw in the vehicle in these instances.

The no chainsaws in NP (NSW) was in the National Parks and Wildlife (Land Management) Regulation 1995 this has been repealed and there is no such restriction in the latest regs. However you will still be subject to all the other regs/act provisions. I fear it would still be a game person who would operate a chainsaw in a NP - its still illegal to use one to gather firewood.
