    300tdi fender over heating

    just replaced the leaky head gasket plus head skim and crack test but now the ***** over heats. with the preasure cap off it seems ok a little over half with the cap on it soon rises with in about 500 meters or so not in to the red but up there.

    when releaseing the presure theres lots of air and water spiting out ect. now the hoses dont feel real hot when all this happens.

    when running with the plastic cap off the radiator lots of air is comeing out. before the gasket was replaced it was fine except it was loseing water in to the oil that seems to have stoped as the oil level has now gone back to normal. level was about a 1/4 inch over full but not milky.

    tomomrow im replaceing the thermostat and temp sender and will be cheaking the temp with a digital thermomitor

    i think its just an air lock but i have never had so much trouble before any ideas?

    Oooopssss.....

    You're not supposed to skin the 300TDi head as it'll remove the hardened coating & it then becomes porous!

    Otherwise, it sounds to me as though you've still got gasket problems. In fact, it almost sounds to me as though you've managed to fit the head gasket on the wrong way around.

    my head bloke recons his done tons of the things. and the gasket is round the right way for sure top was at the top cant go wrong

    It does sound like an air lock or stuck thermostat, lets hope the heat hasn't cooked the head for good.

    looks like after some discussion today it would seam the head tension for the standard gasket is not up to the task of sealing a laminated gasket i think this explains the excesive blowby that was not present before and the air in the water. so im going to contact the suplyer of the head gasket and see what they have to say. when the au falcon went to a laminated the the head bolt tension increased dramaticly over the old style gasket yet still uses the same head so i beleave this to be the problem fingers crossed

    well it looks like i found a cure. i took a punt and tightend all the head bolts down another 15o then the large m12x140 bolts another 25o on top of the 15o seems to of cured the issue so far.

    I got a dud head gasket when my 300TDi cooked. Was genuine Land Rover.

    I believe the shop that did the work for me got reimbursed for re-doing it by LR as it was obviously faulty and was delaminated badly.

    Also - my head was re-skimmed and no problems since (15-20K Kms ago) and my mechanic says it can be done OK if done properly. Lots of others will say otherwise though......

    the head shop here recons this is the second time its been machined. i would hate to see what the comp ratio is now
