    Fuel Tank Question!

    Hi All,
I dropped the rear fuel tank out of the S3 on the weekend (diesel). Just looking for some ideas on how to clean out the inside of tank and remove surface rust from the inside. When draining out the diesel i noticed a few flakes of rust!
    Any Ideas greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    cleaning fuel tank

I cleaned my 1975 S111 petrol tanks with a cheap cut down wire brush tied or taped to a 8mm steel rod , you can bend it to suit all corners of the tank. I also ripped of the internal copper mesh filter and fitted an external fuel filter that can be easily accessed my reason being that all the gunk inside the tank will be sucked out and into the external filter which you can easily change. I have also done this to my two land cruiser diesels and have found so called diesel algea in the filters plus i could see a small amount of water in the filter. These filters cost $2.50 from super cheap. The clear ones are better as you can see the gunk and water very cheap to carry spares doesn,t take up much room in your toolbox. Yeah its bugger removing the fuel tank .

Get a couple of handfuls of small pieces of blue metal. Throw them in the tank and shake it around a bit.

This should get all the crap off the inside, but it may also put a hole or two through in thin spots in the tank which will need to be either brazed or welded or use the stick on tank repair.

throw in some degreaser, and slosh around heaps, take the sender out first, and then pressure wash it. then whip down to your hangar mates and get some wo1 [if no mates, get phosphoric acid based metal cleaner] pour a bit in, like a litre, and slosh around, wait until you can see the metal looking cleaner, time depends on strength of acid soloution, and flush out with water. inspect tank for holes [fill it up] and repair them -solder, welding, pr 1422- from your hangar mates, whatever, add some metho to remove any water left in there and slosh out with petrol or kero, distillate, avtur and refit it.

I might try to degrease the inside, then hit it with rust converter. The hands on approach of trying to clean it up with a wire brush on a stick won't do to well, as the tank has a deep recess in the top of it so it can fit around one of the chassis crossmembers. The blue metal idea should work to get any of the loose cr@p off.

By the way, did the Series 3's come out with rear mounted dual fuel tanks. The one I have seems to be very "Land Rover" in construction?

Dual meaning 2 in the rear? Or one under the driver's seat and one in the rear? There are three locations for standard LR fuel tanks - either side under the seats and in the rear. Wagons, all Stage 1's and some others had tanks in the rear, and all LWB could be fitted with them. 69 litre standard capacity, same as the larger size front tanks.

Buy Dual, I was meaning Standard tank under the driver, plus a one in the rear. Do the standard rear mounted tanks have the cut out in the top to fit around the second last rear crossmember?

Remove the fuel level float and sender, and the strainer so you are left with a bare tank. Put in a couple of metres of small chain and a shovel of concrete sand and gravel blend ( called x-blend at my local builders suppliers), then tumble it around the yard for ten or twenty minutes. Works like a dream. Thoroughly hose or pressure clean out afterwards then some phosphoric acid rust converter to pickle the bare metal. There are also a number of fuel tank internal coating compounds that are usually advertised in the car restorer magazines.
