you can fit anything to anything if you have enough time effort and money available.
but speaking practically your right.

I have a Series II grille panel on the front of my Series I. It was the correct width, but about 50 mm too tall. I sectioned it near the bottom to achieve the correct height.
As has been said....you can fit anything to anything.....but, only the right panels fit Series 1's. ie 80" for 80" (and some of those are different), 86" front for 86" and 107" (too short for 88", but may fit 80") and of course 88" front for 88" and 109".
Rear tubs for 86" and 88" should be the same.

Thanks gents problem solved, I knew they were different
The chassis rails are in the same position (width wise).
The series 2 88" tub has the same internal dimensions (width X length) as the series 1.
However the waist on the series 2 puts the edge of the guards further out. Therefore the inner guards would need to be slimmed down.
There was a pic on one of the fora of a S1 in Indonesia or Malaysia with S2 outer guard panels. But it was easy to pick. So is some respects you can do it.
As has been said - anything is possible given, time, money and desire.
