Defender drawer

This is my first ever post so I appologise for mistakes.
I purchased the new defender in December and have already done a few trips. I thought I would post my drawer setup to give a few ideas to people as ill need help with future projects Im sure.

My aim was not to spend to much money but I didnt want the system to fall apart. Im always throwing heavy items in the back of a car and 17mm ply which people have used was to flexible. 25mm ply was a bit heavy but didnt bend at all.

I started by rivoting an aluminium angle to the floor. It was a little scary drilling into a new car.

I then attached timber uprights to the angle and the LHS using the original tie down holes. All the timber was waterproofed.

The timber top was cut on a 45 degree angle to snuggly fit the back. I managed to find some heavy duty runners that are rated to 120kg and full extension, one metre long.


The next step was to fix left over carpet that had been lying aroung for years. This was folded up under the fascia.

Solid top. Now for the drawer.

I decided to opt for an aluminium drawer for weight and strength. Initially I was just going to rivot but decided to get someone to weld the corners. The sheet is 2.5mm aluminium but I have rivoted aluminium quad to the bottem for extra strength. I dont want sagging after a few years to stop the drawer from sliding.

Overall I am very happy and so far wouldnt change a thing.
Now Ill have to move on to the next project.
