Is it an oil cooled turbo in the FL2? If so I would be guessing that possibly one of the seals in the turbo have gone. Is there a lot of smoke coming out the exhaust while under boost?
Hi All,
I had my car serviced today and the mechanic said that there was some oil leaking a pipe leading away from the turbo into the intercooler. He had to rush off and said to call him Monday to get the full story. My mechanic isn't a LR dealer but a friend BTW.
Being inpaitent I pulled the bash plate off from underneath the engine this morning and found half of it very oily and dirty.
Looking upwards from underneath the engine there is a pipe that runs from the trubo down underneath the engine to the front and into the intercooler.
This pipe has a large thing (technical term here people) that seems to be the source of the oil leak.
The mechanic mentioned the term blowback but I may have misheard him.
Any suggestions as to whats causing the leak? The mechanic mentioned that the engine oil level was toward to lower half of the safe range. I remember checking the oil level about 2 months ago and it was a lot closer the max point.

So where's the big dent? There has to be a reason the bash plate has a massive crease... :P

		Its still under warranty know?
Just take it back, get them to fix it.
Its free and less pain in the bum stressing about if its fixed properly or not.

Theres no dent but there is a small mark where the plate has been rubbing and has pollished the metal.
Time for a stronger bash plate... Good news is that all of those bolt holes are easy to get to and pretty much on the same level so no bending should be required.
Yes but the dealers can be a pain in the backside and who knows if they will fix it properly or not.

You need to get it done under warranty if it is a problem. If the tuirbo isn't working properly and it fails then they will say you never alerted them to the issue in the first place and you'll be xxxx amount of bucks out of pocket for a new turbo.
I'd call them and let them know what was found at the least.

I'm calling them in about 45 minutes as soon as they open.

Ok booked in for next week. Poor South-side LR are going to hate me, I've got the D3 booked for Friday (spare wheel winch broken) and mine on Tuesday.
How much is a lot of smoke? I do notice smoke in the rear mirror (usually at night in the headlights of the car behind me)? But then I am known to give it a boot occasionally.Originally Posted by inside
I noticed it smoked a bit under load from day 1 and wrote it off to being a diesel.

You should only have smoke when you put the boot into her. Thats normal, but normal driving conditions should be smoke free.

Ok Sthside LR 'fixed' it today.
They only had it for a few days and I didn't get to speak to them for very long when they dropped it back to me (Can't complain about their service here - they gave me a Volvo to get to work and then brought my Freelander out to Toowong from the Gabba and drove the Volvo back)..
Anyways the guy on the phone said the bracket was loose and that they had tightened it up so it shouldn't leak oil anymore.
Now this confuses me greatly (as do most things) because I didn't think that pipe should have ANY oil in it what so ever as it is air returning to the engine via the inter-cooler.
Can anyone give us a basic explanation of how an oil cooled turbo is cooled by oil?
