Big Tyres for my Disco 1

    Hey everyone,

i have been looking at buying some big muddies for my disco 1 lately and have been told that the biggest i can fit on it is a 245/75R16. i wanted to go bigger but got told that the tyres will rub when i turn on the inside of the wheel arch on this bar (i'm not sure what it is). The tyres will be going on 16 inch rims obviously and the car has a 2 inch suspension lift. Any ideas what my limits are or what i have to do to make bigger ones fit? i am willing to cut at the body

    Thanks, Shamo

the tyres will rub on the radius rods (the big one's attatched to the diff housing) to fit large tyre's and get no rubbing you need rims with a different offset, I once put my mates 235/85R/16's on my disco 1 and the back one's rubbed so if you trimed the gaurds you will probably fit them in I had a 2" lift as well.

Take a look at the many threads on this web site.
Do a search and there are too many stories and suggestions for me too re-hash.

One thing to remember though, big tyres also means more wear and tear on running gear and does not always mean better off road ability.
A lot of big tyres are show with very little go.

do you think i should just go with the 245/75's then? would it be better to go 245 from 235 or stay 235 and go to a 85 instead of 75?

I have some 235/85/16s on my d1 at the moment (2" lift) they did rub until i did a slight guard chop and they were fine

Ok, up to 32" diameter you will need to do a Camel cut (rear guard cut) and any bigger pretty much requires big guard cut and flares and off set rims.

235 85 16 is just uder 32" and is what I run on my D1 with a small Camel cut and 30 mm (or so) lift and I still get rubbing on the radius rod on full lock.

All the other mods although fairly major and relatively expensive still work pretty well if geared properly.

A mate of mine ran 35" simex's on offset rims with LRA flares etc but had to fit 4:11's to get it geard properly and his used to pull away from mine easilly and handled pretty well with stiffish springs and adjustable twin rear shocks.

He did chew wheel bearings out a fair bit though and has now gone to 33" Silverstones and softer suspention which is even nicer to drive and there is very little noticable difference to it's capabilities.

So in short, you can get away with 32" (maybe 33" at a stretch) with minor mods but anybigger will cost you fairly big, probably twice to 3 times what the tyres will cost to do so it looks and drives reasonably.

Go the 235/85r16.Do a search for camel cut.Once you have done the cut they will fit fine.
Or if you want really good mud tyres have a look at the simex range.I run 32"x9.5r16's on standard disco rims. You lose a bit of turning circle but not to bad.

I've run 245/75 and 235/85 on my D1. The 245s with a 2inch spring lift were OK with a camel cut, the 235s with this setup at full articulation rubbed severely in the wheel arches. My disco doesn't have stabiliser bars and runs softish springs. I don't think 235/85s are a good idea unless you have quite firm springs or longer bumpstops which limits upward travel. 245/75s are a safer bet.

Here's a link that will give you tyre sizes and what needs to be done to run them, but it only refers to things like trimming/bump stop height etc. not modifications to running gear which is expensive.
