Found - Series FC (maybe for sale)

Hello all

Can someone please ID this FC for me. I found it sitting in a paddock yesterday. It is ex PMG (Postmaster General) and looks to be in great condition.

I ask the owner if it was for sale. He has promised to another fella but if he doesn't want it, it is for sale.

If you are interested in this Land Rover PM me as I will be seeing the farmer in around three weeks time. He said that he should know by then whether his friend wants it.

BTW, owner has all the running gear from a second (sister) vehicle that was wrecked many years ago.

It is six cylinder Series 2a 109 Forward Control. Quite rare - four cylinder ones seem to have been in the majority - and there were only a little over 3000 of all types. The 2a forward control had some definite shortcomings* compared to the 2b 110 forward control, although it would be a lot easier to restore, as there are a lot fewer special bits. It would have been built between late 1963 when the six was introduced and September 1966 when the 2b 110 replaced it.

*Braking was hardly adequate fully loaded, let alone with the usual overload enabled by the large tray, and they had a definite tendency to lie on their side given an opportunity, and the handling when loaded could be interesting.

Yes definitely series 2a Forward Control.

The brakes are not as bad as John suggests, in fact they are the same as the later 6cyl normal control Land Rover with a Clayton Dewandre in-line servo booster, although like all brake systems they will suffer if poorly maintained, or if unloaded in the rear.

If buying the vehicle, I would be grabbing the ENV in the shed for spares as they are getting rare. (I have spare halfshaft sets for the rear and a complete ENV front end for a S2A F/C if someone needs them.)

Doortops and much of the cab accessories are regular series parts or modified series parts. The door bottoms can be manufactured out of a regular door and same as the firewall. regular 4 cyl firewall with a few extra holes and a some nutserts.

Any numbers?

Sorry to catch you out, Diana, but that's a Rover diff - ENVs have a simple bowl-shaped diff centre housing, while that one clearly has a moulding in it to clear the crownwheel. Also, rear ENVs have a flat circle in the centre of the diff centre housing to clear the rear-mount fuel tank.

Pity it's a 2A, I might have been interested if it were a 2B. Looks like it's well worth doing up. Whoever gets it is gonna love maintaining the gearshift!

Are they Fordsons in the back ground or 1 Fordson Major and 2 Lanz bulldogs?

Also in the photo of the interior it looks like a Ford truck and a Commer van/bus in the background.

I love going through old farm yards like that, behind my sisters place in Numurkah a bloke has a collection of Mainline's and Bedfords as well as other bits and peices of rust sitting around.

He does have a shed full of other cars and stuff but I havnt got to see what they are as yet.

At least the 2A looks pretty much complete and not modified

Sorry McRover, due to time constraints I was unable to check out all his non military stuff but here are a couple of pix of his tractor collection. In behind the truck however are 2 Bulldogs, one a Lanz and the other a ??? (It had three letters). Owner said this one was quite rare.

Im no expert on the old tractors (bit of knowlage on Fergies) but I spotted in those shots a Deere, a fiat, an Inter and a few that Im not sure what they are.

That is 1 hell of a yard, pitty im over here and they are over there.

I would be interested in purchasing the beast. Would need to get a few quotes for shipment. Might be able to find a backload on a truck?
