    300 Tdi Oil Pump

    Hi All

    I have a 300 Tdi and have found excessive wear in the timing case behind where the oil pump gears run. I understand that the oil pump gears are a replaceable part but am concerned at the cost of replacing the timing case. Has anyone had similar problems or is there any good second hand ones available.

    Hi,

    Was there an oil pressure problem? Can you post pics?

    I have just been through this chasing a slow to go out oil lamp in a 380K 300Tdi in a 130.
    This vehicle is a one owner, serviced EVERY 5K truck. I found deep scoring on the pump plate behind the gears, but not much actual wear at all in the aluminium housing of the timing case.
    I replaced the timing case because although I could buy the gears, the plate is unavailable.(Thinking back, I could've probably refaced it, but it was quite damaged)
    The oil lamp STILL takes the same amount of time to extinguish.
    I am led to believe that these have to suffer some fairly horrific wear to actually cause a problem.

    Hi JC

    Found the damage during strip down, the vehicle has not been used since being purchased as i was made aware of the excessive oil consumption by the PO. The bores had 0.017" wear and the crankshaft was ground to first under size. The oil pressure was not checked before the engine being removed.

    How did the steel plate look?

    It is difficult to quntify the amount of case wear, except for a visual. Any chance of some photos?

    Of course, it would be prudent to replace the case any way as it comes complete with oil pump assembly, seals etc. The $$$ is just a hicccup.

    I can't remember the actual price, but around $600 odd rings a bell.

    Hmm, interesting.
    I've had the sump off a few days ago and the amount of hard facing shrapnel left over from when some of the valve stem caps let go 80,000km ago was frightening. ( a very experienced heavy diesel bloke I know said the filter would catch it all, don't sweat it...)
    The amount stuck in the pick up strainer was even more frightening.
    Had to drop the pickup and pop the screen out to give it a proper clean up.
    I kept thinking "I wonder what the pump housing looks like.... )
    I was too gutless to drop any of the big end caps, I'm at that point of I just don't want to know.....

    New stem caps (the old ones look fine, just insurance..) and stem seals went on too (looks like I tore one installing the seals last oil change. Has had the whiff of leaky seals since, with the oil consumption to match)

    Trying to track down elevated wear metal readings in recent UOA's.......

    Was in Perth to pick up a 98 300 Tdi Discovery and droped in to Rover Tech who just happened to have a second hand timing case with oil pump at a very good price (Thanks again Kevin) so now can finish the engine rebuild.
    Just to let all the pepole know who have 300 tdi's keep an eye on the vacuum pump as the one in the Discovery pooped 2 of the rivits on the end cover and dumped all of the engine oil on the trip home. Lucky no damage was done but could have been a lot worse, fitted the one from the defender which had bolts instead of the rivits. The pump had only been fitted 15K before the failure.
