    New to in car navigators

    Hi all

I'm new to in car navigating though have used hand held GPS's extensively for bush walking.

I'm interested in a navigator that will give position on screen & voice directions in the city, but also allow me to display on screen my position overlaid on topographic maps that I download - typically 1:25 000's, though 1:150 000's also.

Is there such a product, does it work well, and is it value for money?

    Cheers

    Timothy

Hello - yes there are a few products that will do that.
Many PDA type devices now have internal GPS and come packaged with a street navigator program like Tom Tom.
Because they typically run the Microsoft Windows Mobile or Windows CE operating system, you can also install the OziExplorer CE application, and have moving maps of just about anything you want. ( there's a big pool of digitised maps out there, or scan your own. This incudes topo maps.)
However have a look on ebay too - there are some good deals there for example someone on here I know just got a unit with 7" touchscreen with GPS and running Windows CE and a street navigator app. for under $300. I don;t think he's tried Ozi on it yet but it should work.

Value for money - well I now find this combo invaluable ( use the street navigator in the city and switch to OziExplorer in the bush )

Sounds like a Hema Navigator would fit the bill.

Have a look here - Hema Navigator, On & Off Road GPS

Yep I have the Hema and it seems a good unit. I'm just in the initial stages of learning how to use OziExplorer though.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".
