    Removing Muffler TD5

    Hi Guys,

Looking to remove the muffler off the Defender this week some time - is it worth paying someone or is it as easy as grinding it off and sliding some pipe over it with some clamps either end?

I have been told too keep the muffler by a mate, as l will get over the noise!?

Also - any warrent implications? Is the Dealer going to go crazy?

It's probably worth taking it to an exhaust fitter. It would be a pretty easy job for them to do as they have all the gear to flare the ends of the new pipe section. Just tell them to do it in a way that you can easily change it back if you want to.

...that true. He doesn't drive TD5! haha
    Is it worth doing?

He told me the turbo will spool up faster (better.)
    Different (louder) exhuast note?

Worth taking both mufflers out? Effect?

i agre with phil, most exhaust shops will nearly do it on the spot, cost me $40 to remove the muffler, a few months later another $40 to remove the resinator and than six or so months later complete new straight through normal bent exhaust for $200

i reckon the 30tdi is a little noisey as a straight through

i know i went the long way around, i removed the muffler because it sounded like a good idea, removed the resinator because i crushed the tail pipe, fitted a nnew system because i needed to install a PTO winch

td5 are quite different in note to the 300tdi. LRH's 300tdi 3'' straight through you can hear coming 2 blocks away, thats why he's now after a rear muffler
the td5 with the center removed dosent really get any louder, more of a deeper note. ive removed the rear one on mine but its to loud for me, thats on a 90, shorter system than a 110. ide remove the center, and if your bored one day take the rear one off and see what its like. if its to loud put it back on.

and yes the turbo dose spool quicker with it removed.

    cheers phil

    So...

Does anyone with a TD5 have both the mufflers off? Is it worth doing in term of turbo spool or slight power gain? How noisey?

    Thanks,

I took the centre muffler off my 130 and it made no appeciable noise difference. Turbo does spool up faster though.

Well - l had the center muffler removed today and replaced with some pipe. Certainly notice the turbo spooling up faster. Slight note change when under load at low RPMs. But that is about it.

What is the exhuast 'note' like with the rear muffler removed?? Anyone?
