Can you do anything useful with a Blackberry?

Just started a new job and with it comes a Blackberry with GPS rather than a proper telephone.
Having a bit of a poke around and although using Google Maps could be somewhat useful that doesn't help when the network is dodgy (well it is Optus).
There is a built in Maps application but no actual map files as far as I can see.

Actual this seems to be one of the features of the Blackberry, lots of icons that launch applications that either don't work or are pointless.

Unless I am holding it upside down?

One thing with Blackberry's is they have the capacity to do lots but not in base form ie you need to buy the relevant stuff

Before you launch off and get maps just check what the GPS actually is - my understanding is some of these things use assisted GPS which means they still need the network - but I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me will chime up

In this case the GPS is internal and working, just having trouble getting the network features to do what they should, like display Google Maps.
The provider (Optus) says everything is good at their end and everything is enabled, so the problem is at our end. Our IT guys say our Blackberry enterprise server doesn't handle any web features and so the problem is with Optus, so in circles we go, again.
