    Td5 headlight problem

    Hi all,

Hoping someone is online who may have had a similar problem (now stuck at a truck stop about 3 hours from Sydney).

Headlights (parkers, low & high) off instantly. Great fun on the hwy at night

Checked all the fuses and all seem ok but not sure which relays to try if this impacts things???

Strangely the high beams work when I hold the flash stalk so power is getting to part of the switch. Switch btw is new (well 10k old). May or may not be the culprit.

Hoping someone has had a similar problem .... and fix.

    Thanks in advance.

Your problem is more than likely in the high / low beam switch. Landrover in their wisdom didn't install relays for the lights in the Defenders and all current passes through the switch. It is possible to bridge out the faulty section of the switch with a soldered wire loop as an emergency repair.

Hi Dane I presume you've checked fuses & fusible links in engine compartment? Are any other instruments off at the same time (eg water temp) or are the lights the only system affected?

    thanks for the quick replies.

just tracking down how far the power reaches at the moment.

all other instruments seem to work (indicators, hazards, tacho, fuel & temp gauges). Only additional wiring under the bonnet is for an ARB driving light setup. These still function when I hold the headlight flash on.

having a look at the top of the switch I assume i need to bridge the brown (live?) with the red (parkers, tail & dash) and the blue (headlight h & l)??? This should get me going?

    cheers

G'day dane. it will be your head light switch! I have burnt out 2-3 head light switches so far. The contacts get too hot and melt. Espeacaly if you are running driving lights. The relay is the second from the left from memory. When you get home PM drivesafe (on here) and ask about his head light wiring upgrade. Easy to fit and at a good price.

i have had the same problem but mine only happens once every blue moon after the first incident i replace switch and put in one of drivesafe's looms for headlight and spotlights and had been working great until two weeks ago when half way to rocky and lights went out at 110kph not fun pulled over turned car off then back on and all lights working again.

mine problems got me stumped as switch is still good and all wiring is ok

Check your relay, after I instaled I had some slight difficultys. Found my relay holder looked like this,

Picked up a new one from super cheep, the relay was still ok.
