02 Defender 130 TD5 CrewCab

Hi guys,

Newbie to the forums, thought I would ask around before acting on what seems to me like a good looking machine.

As the title says, its an 02 defender. It has factory aircon, bull bar, winch, roofracks etc - what seems like more than i will need.

Through a LR dealer, he wants about $24k for it - 160K kms. I will talk it down though. Will be getting a 3rd party vehicle inspection done on it first.

I guess my question(s) is/are: How can i be sure that its a great deal? Is there any common faults with this model? Anything at all that I should look out for?
Looked on Redbook, seems that he would have only traded it for somewhere around 16-17k (because of the extras i would imagine).

Please post anything that you think I should be aware of - no matter how small

Price is a tad high, but not ridiculous. The options will push up the price a bit, esp if it has a good winch, or long range tanks etc.

Common problems to search for (here on AULRO) would be:
o Oil pump bolt (TD5 no-so-common issue on the older ones, but has been heard of on a few later ones)
o Oil in the loom (much more common - easy fix for a couple of hundred bucks)
o Fuel reg on the rear of the engine (Leaks)
o Fuel pump seems to go around 100-120K Kms. At 160K has prob been replaced.
o Chassis cracks, if it has had a hard life.

That's the ones that come to mind initially.

If it has got a full LR service history then you're onto the right sort of vehicle.

If you have a pre-purchase inspection done, I would suggest taking it to an independent Land Rover specialist, or at least someone who really knows Landys. It's no point taking it to someone who'll just look at the same things as looking at any old car, you need someone who knows the specific problems with this model.
I live in Vic, but if you tell us what area of NSW you live then others on here might have some suggestions of where to take it for an inspection.

24K isn't too bad if you factor in the lack of availability of a GOOD 130. IMHO the 02 is the better one as it should still have the sals rear differential. (Changed LATE 02 to a useless P38a girlie diff)
MAKE SURE it is inspected thoroughly by a actual LR specialist prior to purchase.
If all looks good, they are a good model, chipped they will make a fantastic towing tourer

Not all, but yes seen a few over the years, even some 110's too. Up where the A frame support crossmember is attached to the top of the chassis rails each side they can form cracks as this part of the chassis is very rigid.

Has to have had a pretty hard time of it though.

Dunno if LR dealers do this for anyone, or only for those that bought a RR new from them, but I know a bloke who took a Defender he was considering purchasing in for a once over. They went over it, and discounting the dealer prices for fixing the problems they were spot on.

Nope. Just something to look out for.

I've got an ex-Telstra 130 which probably copped a flogging up in the NT being driven by people who likely hated it and it hasn't got any cracks at all. Probably wasn't overloaded though.

In September 2003 I bought my 130" CC Td5 with 55k km - no aircon - no accessories - but with still 1 yr factory warranty for $26,000 from a LR dealer. Probably done a very good deal....
