Aeroparts Capstan Winch Shear Pins

G'day Everyone

I'm restoring an Aeroparts capstan winch for Arthur. So far have been able to source most of the worn parts, namely the bronze bushes and the bearings.

But am having some trouble in sourcing the shear pins. I beleive they should be 5/16 in size.

Can any one suggest where I could get them or what I could use as an alternative?

eg. Would regular 5/16 brass rod be sufficient rather than resorting to using something that won't shear (ie a steel bolt.)

Its been a couple of years since I have bought any, but the last ones I bought they were purchased through my local ARB dealer.

The shear pins for the thomas PTO winches are they same size from memory.

I found the genuine shear pin at John Craddocks in the UK for about 14 pounds each and I was thinking of getting a couple in along with some other stuff I am looking at importing. For a lot of stuff it seems to be cheaper at the moment to get them sent over rather than buy here. But if someone like ARB can supply something generic it would be good to know.

Where did you find parts locally? I have a decent leak at the front of the shaft where it comes out for the crank handle and was wondering if that could be fixed up with new seals or something.

I rang a couple of ARB stores today. The guys we're all trying to be helpful but unfortunately they didn't know much about shear pins other than they do have them for Warn winches and were happy for me to come down and check them out to see if they are suitable.

It was staright forward to source the bearing, bearing seal and race (ie the ones for the worm gear) and bronze bushes (the two in bracket for the drive shaft and the control level) from local bearing suppliers (in this case in Footscray). They were all standard sizes and you should be able to get them pretty much off the shelf at any reasonable bearing supplier.

I decided since I had the winch appart I would replace all the wearing parts that I could. The bushes were worn probably from the drive shaft and control level rattling around over the years. The bearings had some corrosion more due to water condensation in the oil and not being used much in recent years. Fortunately the main and worm gear were in very good condition.

The original shear pins appear had been replaced with steel pins long ago. I assume that original shear pins would be brass.

I will go down to an ARB store and have a look at what their pins look like and might be lucky that they are 5/16 diameter.

£14.50 (approx $40) seems steep for each pin (but maybe that's reasonable, I have no idea what a shear pin costs). I might experiment with putting in a steel pin on the bollard and using standard 5/16 brass rod for the drive shaft shear pin. The pin diameter for the bollard pin seems some sort of odd diameter.

Not at current exchange rates - £14.50 is $A25 at the moment. It's the postage that'll kill you though - you could probably double that price to get the pins here.

G'day Everyone

I've nearly completed restoring my winch and am up to replacing the dog gear on the cranshaft with the drive plate.

Unfortunatly I didn't get the bolt or the lock tab washer (according to the Aeroparts winch diagram) that hold the drive plate on. It appears to be a large bolt with 16 TPI thread on a 11/16 shaft. Does that sound right to anyone?

Also does anyone happen to know where I could get one of these bolts?

I doubt I'll be able to get the lock tab washer, so do you think using a spring washer would work ok?

This is a proper shearpin for a capstan winch, which has to be replaced with a solid pin ( 5/16 th bolt )for hand cranking.It is very important that you use a proper shearpin when operating the winch on a hill.The last thing you want to do is break the pin that secures the bollard to the shaft,in which case the bollard would turn freely with absolutely no way of stopping it .(I've never had any success uploading pictures so if there is no pic.,send me a PM.) The 11/16" sounds nasty. 3/4" with 16 TPI is UNF, but UNF doesn't define 11/16", at least anywhere I can find.

If it is 3/4" UNF, then Nepean Boltmaster in Sydney would likely have one, but there's probably someone closer to you.
