    Cambodia

Just back from a week in Cambodia, some pictures to share, starting with a relevant subject ...

A cynic had told me earlier that most of the landmines are gone, that the NGOs are still harping on the subject so that donors will keep donating ...

The truth ... 30km from Pailin, where we camped last weekend, 3 people were killed in June last year when their vehicle ran over an anti-tank mine.
The locals said they had driven over that spot many times over many years but that one time, the pick-up (ute) was heavily loaded ... too heavily loaded, enough to set off the mine.

MAG | Blogs > There are stats, more stats… and the deadly truth

Safety issues have a different flavour to those used to bombs falling from above and mines blowing up from below ...

Meet the Dickins, from Blue Mountains ...

Panorama, stitched from 5 shots, of Pailin town, last bastion of the Khmer Rouge.

More traditional, touristy scene of the amazing Angkor Wat at dawn ...

Was there still a Soviet T55 tank on the side of the airfield?? I spent 14 months in Cambodia from 90-91, I flew Air Dispatch 6 days a week while I was there and nearly always got shot at coming into Sisophon and Pailin.
I see they havent changed the way they load a vehicle, I have heaps of B@W shots from my time there.

Did not see any tank by the airport, must have been the high prices of scrap metal in recent years.

Thanks, Mick. The Angkor Wat and elephant photos were taken with a Leica manual focus lens (Elmarit 35mm f/2.8) modified to fit my Nikon D700, and I absolutely love the Leikon combo.
Anyone planning to visit Angkor must bring a tripod, I forgot mine. Luckily, the D700 copes with high ISO situations beautifully.

Thanks for the comments and sorry about the dead links. I tweaked those pix in flickr and it changed the url every time I save a new copy, and I can no longer edit my post.
Still, it's probably easier to view them in flickr, especially in fullscreen slideshow mode.
