    110 ute cab extension

Has anyone done/ seen/ know about extending the cab on a ute??? I'd love to get one and be able to add say 300mm to the cab to give some behind seat storage and allow for new seats that could adjust back a litttle further.

there is a guy on here that is doing it, I forget his name though. I know of a mechanic in Mackay QLD doing it to his car, LANDROVER SPARES MACKAY.

Land Rover Australia did this themselves in the mid/late '90s with the Big Cab model. There's a few floating around still.

This is one of those models. I think the cab is perfect. I store the compressor, multiple tool roles, the Monster's pillow/doona, and often a large suitcase behind the seats. This one has been rolled and repaired and it was apparrently murder trying to rebuild the turret as there were no replacements available. I found this one on Ebay and there was another on ebay at the same time with an extra 100,000km. There were 1000 of them released in Australia. Telstra took a heap, the VIC public Works took a heap and there were approximately 250 rleased to the public. The 130 chasis allows for the extra cab area as well as a full length (8ft) tray. Good ute and worth the effort to extend I'd say. July '95 build

I may stand corrected on the 120". Cheers.

The seats also slide a little further back and recline right to the rear wall. This is an advantage for the taller drivers. I'm a medium build so the space behind the seat is my advantage.

A fella that I bought a bullbar and winch off had one of those in an ex-telstra 130 with an aluminium tray. I'd never seen or heard of them before.

Quite seriously, they are unreal! Thats how they should have come from the factory. Very impressed.

    Specs

Sorry Fatnold, to get back to your original post, I'm not with the ute at the moment but when I get back there (in a month or two) I could take some more photos and get some measurements if you like.

I have a '97 build Defender 130 with 8'' cab extension and steel framed hardwood tray - which has been repaired. My cousin bought it after it had been rolled - with slow speed trailer jacknife on wet road and left rear wheel hit rock side on.

Apparently sold new in '99 by Melbourne City Land Rover.
Re the extended cab. A Queensland Transport Modification Plate is fixed to the front of the drivers side seat box. Information on it:
    Date 07/10/98 A/OFFICER NO 1713 REF NO PLS1461MP
MODIFICATION BY PETER L SMITH ENG P/L
    MOD CODES LK2
    VIN SALLDKAF7VA130244

Re spaces for Tyre Sizes, Mod Seating Capacity, Mod GVM and GCM - all N/A.

Outriggers same as originals (which are still there) to support rear of cab have been welded to chassis 8'' further back. Also more standard outriggers another 9'' back from these on 130 - which in this application had nothing attached to them.

Probably the most difficult part to make regarding this extension is the cab roof. Possibly made by cutting and joining two standard ones. Otherwise, anyone with metalworking skills and facilities could make one.

If using mine as a model for doing another conversion with same overall dimensions,, there are are several small things I would probably do differently. Have made some minor modifications. Including - seat rails have been moved back 3''. I moved the middle seat back a further 5" to the same place relative to rear of the cab as in a standard one.

The Big Cabs were made by several bodybuilders, usually one or two in each main state. They each were left to their own devices on how the job was done.
Some made their own new roof panels, some lengthened the original.

Peter Smith is well known in Land Rover circles (in Sydney at least) so I assume it's him that LR used for the engineering certs.
